Help for Leslie Hurwitz's Ongoing Health Issues

Many of you know my father, Leslie Hurwitz, who is a retired musicologist, educator, concert pianist, and composer who has had a number of his works recorded in Europe. He has also been an avid walker who until a few years ago would take strolls at Horn Pond in Woburn and elsewhere. During the pandemic, however, he ended up in the hospital with a knee issue, then off to rehab, returning home weaker but still able to walk, but late last summer, he ended up back in the hospital and then off to rehab again, briefly returning home and then going right back to the hospital and rehab, and at this point had to go to a respite room the past fall at an assisted living facility where he remains today. My Dad remains healthy and in good spirits but because of extreme leg weakness, he’s unable to come home for the foreseeable future, and even after having a number of tests—including one focusing on a growth on his lower spine that will be looked at in more detail soon—it’s still not known for sure what happened to cause this.

Fortunately, my Dad is in a great facility with good people helping him out, but until we can figure out what’s causing the weakness, he can’t come home for what could be a long stretch of time, and because the monthly payments are substantial and completely out-of-pocket, his stay there is hitting my family hard financially, especially with several months of payments already made. This fundraiser is to help with the substantial monthly cost for the respite room and his other medical expenses. The donations will greatly ease the financial burden we’ve carried these past several months. We still have hope that he will physically continue to get stronger and will one day soon get back home, but he’s simply unable to do so right now because he can’t get around at all, including even to the bathroom.
