Helping Uncle Doug with Health and Home
Dear friends! It is very rare for me to do something like this, but I really feel in my heart that I need to help my Uncle Doug.
The Bible says:
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” (Proverbs 31:8)
Uncle Doug is an incredible man. I know you have probably seen me post some pictures when I go to his ranch out in West Texas. The reason I created this
gofundme is to raise money to help him out during a very difficult time in his life. Uncle
Doug has been in a wheelchair since he was
21 years old due a motorcycle accident caused by an older woman who was
driving on the wrong side of the street. This unfortunate event changed his life forever. He has been a paraplegic for about 36 years and his life has not been easy.
Amazingly enough, he found the courage to face his circumstances and has lived
independently as a victor, not a victim.
His tenacity was demonstrated through his educational and philanthropic
commitments. He refused to give up. He has secured a bachelor and Masters degrees in Education and served his school district as a counselor for many years. His
students loved him and succeeded under his leadership. 12 hour days investing in
students was not enough for him. He also competed in Wheelchair sports such as basketball and racing. There seemed to be no end to his accomplishments. Most
recently he wrote his life story in a book he published called: “My Journey, The
Long Way Home”. It is an amazing read!
As a paraplegic there are many health challenges. One of these challenges is
related to the painful pressure sores on his body. Pressure sores can take anywhere from months to years to heal and often cause dangerous infections. Some of his
sores are the size of grapefruits. Because of his declining health he was not able
to work for three years. With this comes many expenses that are impossible to
keep up with, especially being unemployed. Since his last recovery, Uncle Doug
has begun his search for a new employment so that he can keep up with the overwhelming expenses associated with his condition and life in general.
Uncle Doug’s health care coverage alone with medicare and medicaid is over
$1200 a month. Medical expenses plus his personal needs take up his entire long
term disability check. He currently needs to be admitted to the hospital for a
minimum of a week just to get him back to health and with a 20% copay there is
nothing left to pay. For this reason he has delayed going to the hospital. He just
can't keep up with the expenses.
My goal is to raise $20,000 to help with his medical expenses and lift some of the burdens associated with his home and land. I am asking you to consider giving
generously to this cause. This is just a small amount needed to help this amazing man who has done so much to pour into the lives of others over his lifetime. If you are not able to give financially, but have abilities in construction would like to give of your time and talent, please consider working with me to build a team to travel to Uncle Doug’s ranch to help where needed.
If you have any questions please contact me directly and I would be happy to
answer any questions you might have.
I want to thank you in advance for being kind hearted and supporting this worthy cause.
