Steve and Shelia Berman , owners of Arcadia Motors in Heathsville, Va. were married on 12-13-14. They have three beautiful children, Patrick (15), Bailey (13) and Jullia (11).
Late last October after playing two rounds of golf with his son, 46 year old Steve noticed some soreness under his left arm. He thought he pulled a muscle. A week later, his wife, Sheila, noticed an egg size lump in his armpit. Sheila immediately called his general practioner and he was then sent for a series of test which revealed that his whole lymphatic chain was swollen, along with his spleen. A pre-diagnosis of lymphoma was reported.
The first week of December the node under his arm was removed and on Dec. 20th he was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Cancer. This is a rare cancer seen in only 6 percent of people. The prognosis averages six months to three years survival. In the last two years great strides have been made, and reports of achieved remission have been as long as seven years due to new treatment regimens. The majority of patients are stage 4 before it's found due to it being a blood cancer.
Steve received three rounds of RCHOP, and was then admitted into the John Hopkins Hospital for a 96 hour continuous treatment of high dose chemo. He is now waiting for a stem cell transplant. This is a very aggressive treatment that they will only do in younger healthier patients. This treatment will take approximately one year without any major setbacks.
The Hospitality House at JohnsHopkins cost $87 a day. Insurance does not cover this fee. They have already been there a month and they can't leave for a long time. He has to remain in a quarantined setting and within walking distance of the hospital because his immune system is all but nonexistant. Steve is fighting so hard to live for his family. As much as they hate to accept financial help, the bills are steadily piling up. Mortages, power bills, insurance premiums etc. are just a portion of what needs to be paid. Please find it in your heart to give to this family if you can. No gift is too small. Every dollar helps and is deeply appreciated. There life was perfect until in the blink of an eye, their whole world was turned upside down. I t could happen to any one of us at anytime.
May God Bless the Gift and the Giver.
Thank you,
