Help Fran Restore Her Sight

Fran Giblin and I have been the closest of friends since we met at college during Freshman orientation. We not only were roomies through college, but housemates for another five years until she moved home to Massachusetts to care for her aging parents. After our rather care-free and career-driven youth, Fran was her parents’ sole caretaker, and met the needs that her father’s dementia, and her mother’s Alzheimer’s and cancer demanded.
This led her to pursue a calling in social work and medical advocacy and for years she has cared for the mentally and intellectually disabled in a group home setting. While working 60-70 hours a week, and whether she has a caseload of 72 or 4, she calls herself a “professional mother,” and puts her “guys” before herself.
Lately Fran has had health issues of her own, and she went into debt quickly from medical bills piling up after the company she worked for downgraded their medical insurance. Recently she was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes, rendering her almost blind, with deterioration into total blindness inevitable unless she received surgery. As anyone would feel with their ability to see at risk, this would mean she would no longer be able drive or do her job, and she would also be disabled, so it was imperative she have cataract surgery immediately.
In March, she received surgery in one eye, and in April the second eye surgery followed. Unfortunately, she has been informed by her insurance company that they will not cover $9,000 of the expenses of the surgery. Together with the rest of her close friends from college (aka, her “sistahs”) we are asking for help on her behalf to help Fran cover the remaining cost owed of her very necessary surgery, with any remaining funds raised to go towards follow up visits. Please contribute what you can, so that the cost of Fran’s sight does not cost her going into further debt, which she cannot afford.
