Help Fulfill a Lifelong Dream to Visit Kolkata

Donation protected
In March 1987, I was adopted from Kolkata, India from the International Mission of Hope (IMH) to a loving family Mary (mom) Dan (dad) Jessica (sister) Andy (brother) and later Pinky (sister, who is also adopted.)

My parents ensured we had exposure to culturally significant events and customs. My parents took us to Holi days, bought indian clothes, learned recipes, and always spoke about how special I was for being adopted. They never withheld or discouraged me to explore that part of my cultural identity. I believe this has been an instrumental part of my life.

I am planning a trip with the Ties Program for Feb 1-Feb 14th 2026 to visit Kolkata, my birthplace. We attempted to go in January 2002 as a family, but the proximity of the 9-11 attacks on the US and war that ensued cancelled our family dream. Now nearly 25 years later, I embarking on this journey as a curious solo traveller looking to find meaning and perspective of where I come from.

My work and education has given me a perspective of privilege and I believe as a life long learner this trip will allow me to feel less alone. I have never been in a room, nonetheless a city/village/country that there will be people who look like me. My experiences as a person of color has lead me down a path of identity exploration. I received my masters in 2021 in Human Relations focusing on Diversity Equity and Social Justice. My undergrad was gifted by my parents and grandparents and I am grateful. However, my masters program has left me with a financial barrier to international travel.

As a single person living in Seattle under the median household income, I am leaning on community for support.

This trip is a once in a lifetime and I am very excited for this opportunity. I felt I should wait for my 40th birthday for this experience, but I will have the pleasure of being newly 39 in 2026 and embarking on a dream nearly four decades in the making.

Your contribution & gift will cover:
-Round trip airfare
-The Ties Program fees (includes lodging, some meals, licensed social workers, translators, and in-country transportation, pre and post adoptee support)
-Spending money
-Additional food & resources

I have already received the days off of work (1/28/2026-2/18/2026). When I have the itinerary for the program, I will share here.

Thank you for looking, sharing, reviewing, and supporting this lifetime dream.
