Help fund Abigail’s post viral neurological treatment

Abigail is a vibrant, funny, intelligent, and creative 15yr old who has been debilitated by Long Covid since Jan 2022. Since then she has slowly been forced to give up many activities that once gave her joy. She can no longer attend regular school. She has given up horseback riding. She has to limit herself to minimal social outings as she cannot keep up with her friends anymore, which only has increased her isolation and resulting depression.

Recently, Abigail’s symptoms have been increasing in severity, and she is at a point now where she has severe muscular skeletal pain always at a 7/10 or more and she is rarely able to sleep as a result of her pain. She suffers from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, which causes her to pass out frequently, Amplified Muscular Pain Syndrome & Fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal symptoms such as frequent vomiting and food intolerance, and extreme fatigue. She also has suffered from unexplained seizures and chest pains. Long Covid is a degenerative disease that does not resolve on its own, only slowly increases in severity, and for some unlucky patients who are genetically more susceptible, such as Abigail, can result in the loss of mobility, ability to see and hear, loss of control of bodily functions, sever insomnia, and ultimately death.

This is a young woman who no longer is able to enjoy the life she once had or even consider looking forward to the life she could have in the future.

The Spero Pediatric Long Covid Center would offer actual treatment for Abigail’s symptoms, possibly even a cure. Patients leave the center in remission, much like when a cancer patient has successfully gone through chemotherapy. This center is different than the pain and fatigue clinics Abigail has attended thus far because it offers a cure for the cause and not just learning how to live with and mask the symptoms. The center uses established medical neurological treatments in a novel way, and can offer Abigail a full recovery.

There are no other pediatric clinics of its kind. The other Long Covid treatment centers available are for adults only, and current procedure for pediatric long covid patients is to continue care from their pediatrician. But while our pediatrician has been an incredible champion and practiced judicious reactive treatment, Abigail has found no reprieve in the current treatment options available locally.

Our family is asking our network of friends, family and colleagues to consider donating to help pay for the treatment center and the temporary relocation of Abigail and mom to Arkansas. The center is not covered by insurance and has an estimated cost upwards or $3200 per week for a minimum of 14 weeks, with additional separate relocation and accommodation costs (approx. $4000 per

month).
