Hello, I am Andrea Soto. I was raised in Juarez, Mexico, and at the present time I describe myself as a first-generation Mexican American movement-based artist and collaborator based in Los Angeles. This project, Lo que el fuego me dio (What the fire gave me) is my love letter to the community. It is a self-produced project that started as an intimate performance piece, for my family and close friends to witness. I started it back in April with the intention of celebrating my ancestors and their beauty. I felt far from home, from my Mexican community, and this piece allowed me to hug my Latin roots and to embrace the feeling of yearning with fervor.

This November 10th and 11th at 7:30 pm, it becomes an expanded immersive universe built by the hands of a collective of incredible artists, and will be presented by Highways Performance Space and Gallery in Santa Monica, California as an evening event. This project is made to create in unity, gather to witness, and celebrate the power of identity.

As a Mexican-American artist, my aspiration for my collaborative practice is to be supportive of the artistic community by compensating them for their valuable contribution to my vision. I want to take steps towards a sustainable exchange, especially within systemic marginalized communities. For the evolution of this project, I am working towards raising money to pay the collective of artists and to fund production expenses. I have been applying for funding, reaching out to organizations, institutions, but I have not had any luck yet. Unfortunately I can’t fund this work from my own pocket as I recently graduated college and am still finding my feet on the economy of the arts (yay!??), so I am reaching out for support!

The dream is to compensate the artists (8), including myself as the producer, with at least $150 for their contribution = $1200. And for production expenses I am looking at spending around $600 including set, studio rental, art supplies, printing, studio rental space, etc... which in total is $1800.

You attending our show is already wonderful enough! But the more funding we receive, the more financial support I can give back to the community. Any donation of yours will get this vision closer to its fullness and means the world.

I have assembled an amazing group of LA-based artists, painters, filmmakers, dancers, musicians, who will build this temple with me, an ecosystem of art mediums. Truly thankful to them: Dulce Escobedo, Maya Paredes, Erick Benitez, Nia Scovel, Nikki Ochoa, Quincy Clemons, and Julian Prins. Each artist will be developing elements of the original work into an evolved body made of their own history and ancestry.

Moreover, this work was inspired by my grandparents, my favorite humans, who got to witness the premiere at Calarts, which brings it even closer to my heart.

To tell you more about Lo que el fuego me dio… I had the beautiful privilege to develop it with Dulce Escobedo, who I admire deeply and who carries an unparalleled force. We sat together and wrote down single words that make up who we are and where we grew up: tacos, viernes, frontera, street art, abuelo. An auto-biographical way of making inspired by Frida. “A capacity to invoke a whole universe out of fragments of self,” writer Carlos Fuentes said about Frida Kahlo’s work. I wanted to create a glistening and shiny universe where pain and beauty exist as a symbiotic relationship and meet in a space of exhibition.

This work was born as a welcome to the sacred, to the communal transmuted body. The birthing of a soul, celebrated, then penetrated by the sun, burned down to the very Earth, to be rebirthed once more. A cycle shared with each other, a conversation between souls held tightly, in different planes of existence, until emptiness is allowed.

The body as the temple of the soul. The face as the temple of the body. What happens when the body is fragmented and punctured by earthly elements, exterior collisions? Where is the shrine existing then?

Soy Andrea Soto. Crecí en Juárez, México, y en la actualidad me describo como un artista y colaborador mexicana-estadounidense de primera generación basada en Los Ángeles. Este proyecto, Lo que el fuego me dio, es mi carta de amor a la comunidad. Es un proyecto que comenzó como una pieza de performance íntima, para mi familia y amigos cercanos. Lo comencé en abril con la intención de celebrar a mis ancestros y su belleza. Me sentía lejos de casa, de mi comunidad mexicana, y esta pieza me permitió abrazar mis raíces latinas y abrazar con fervor el sentimiento de anhelo.

En Noviembre 10 y 11 a las 7:30 pm, se expande a un universo construido por las manos de un colectivo de artistas increíbles, y será presentado por Highways Performance Space and Gallery en Santa Mónica, California, como evento en el atardecer. Este proyecto es un espacio para crear en unidad, reunirse en comunidad, y celebrar el poder de la identidad.

Como artista mexicana-estadounidense, mi aspiración para mi práctica colaborativa es apoyar a la comunidad artística compensándolas por su valiosa contribución a mi visión. Quiero acercarme hacia un intercambio sostenible, especialmente dentro de comunidades sistémicamente marginadas.

Para la evolución de este proyecto, estoy trabajando para recaudar dinero para pagar al colectivo de artistas y tener fondos para gastos de producción como materiales de escenario, suministros de arte, impresiones para marketing, renta de espacio de estudio, etc. He estado aplicando a becas, conectándome con organizaciones e instituciones, pero todavía no he tenido suerte. Desafortunadamente, no puedo financiar este trabajo con mi propio dinero ya que recientemente me gradué de la universidad y todavía estoy encontrando mi camino en la economía de las artes (¿¡yay???), así que estoy buscando apoyo!

He reunido un increíble grupo de artistas, pintores, cineastas, bailarines y músicos de Los Ángeles, que construirán este templo conmigo, un ecosistema de medios artísticos. Realmente agradecida con ellos: Dulce Escobedo, Maya Paredes, Erick Benítez, Nia Scovel, Nikki Ochoa, Lu Coy y Julian Prins. Viniendo de un antepasado cultural diferente, cada artista desarrollará elementos de la obra original en un cuerpo evolucionado hecho de su propia historia y ascendencia. Además, esta obra se inspiró en mis abuelos, mis humanos favoritos, que pudieron presenciar el estreno en Calarts, lo que la acerca aún más a mi corazón.

Para contarles más sobre Lo que el fuego me dio… tuve la hermosa oportunidad de desarrollarlo con Dulce Escobedo, a quien admiro profundamente y quien tiene una fuerza inigualable. Nos sentamos juntas y escribimos palabras individuales que conforman quiénes somos y dónde crecimos: tacos, viernes, frontera, street art, abuelo. Una forma autobiográfica de crear inspirada en Frida. “La capacidad de invocar todo un universo a partir de fragmentos de uno mismo”, dijo el escritor Carlos Fuentes sobre la obra de Frida Kahlo. Quería crear un universo reluciente y brillante donde el dolor y la belleza existan como una relación simbiótica y se encuentren en un espacio de exhibición.

Esta obra nació como una bienvenida a lo sagrado, al cuerpo comunitario transmutado. El nacimiento de un alma, celebrado, luego penetrado por el sol, quemado hasta la misma Tierra, para renacer una vez más. Un ciclo compartido entre sí, una conversación entre almas mantenidas con fuerza, en diferentes planos de existencia, hasta permitir el vacío.

El cuerpo como templo del alma. El rostro como templo del cuerpo. ¿Qué sucede cuando el cuerpo es fragmentado y perforado por elementos terrestres, por colisiones exteriores? ¿Dónde existe entonces el santuario?
