These were his injuries coming into the hospital:

We just spoke with a neurosurgeon about Lucas’s condition. He suffered significant head trauma on the right side. He was bleeding profusely from the right ear when he arrived by mediflight. The skull is fractured in several places, most seriously towards the top of the head where pieces of the skull were pushed into the brain. The meninges in that area are torn. A craniotomy (removal of part of the skull) was performed in that area. There is brain bruising, although the extent of bruising is not quantified at this time. The craniotomy will allow the brain to swell without risk that the increased pressure will cause more damage. There apparently are fractures that extend to the base of the skull which required introducing a liquid binder into the porous interior of the skull bones to act as a glue to hold the pieces together. He was not responsive to any of the stimuli used to assess neurological function, although medications given by the paramedics could suppress some of that. Complicating matters is the fact that intubation was difficult so oxygen deprivation could have occurred which would cause hypo if brain injury. Unfortunately, his neurological state really can’t be assessed right now and we will just have to wait until some of the acute trauma subsides.
