HELP FUND NIGERIA'S PRIDE EVENT: "NGANGA 2021"
Donation protected
One Action Foundation are a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) operating in Lagos, Nigeria. We focus on improving the well-being of LGBTQI+ individuals in Nigeria. We do this by providing Psychosocial support, Socio-economic support, Communications and Research works. We have been in operation since year 2017.
In year 2020, we hosted the first ever virtual Event in Nigeria called NGANGA. The theme was "CELEBRATING OUR SURVIVAL AND RESILIENCE". The event saw over 85 people in attendance globally. This year 2021, we are excited to host another NGANGA. This year's theme is "AMPLFYING OUR VOICES" and it will include activities from other LGBTQI+ NGOs, LGBTQI+ individuals, Allies and other special guests.
WHY NGANGA IS IMPORTANT TO US
Nganga is not just a pride event but also a movement that serves as a way for LGBTQI+ individuals living in Nigeria to discuss specific issues that are more unique to the Nigerian LGBTQI+ community and celebrate the progress of the Nigerian LGBTQI+ community. This is because, in year 2014, the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA) was signed into law in Nigeria. The law prohibits marriage between people of the same sex, forbids cohabitation between same-sex sexual partners and bans any public show of same-sex amorous relationship, prohibits registrations, operation or participation of gay clubs, societies, and organization" or "supports" the activities of such organizations. Punishments are severe and attracts between 10-14 years imprisonment. The SSMPA as well as the lack of social acceptance, negative narratives about LGBTQI+ individual have continually fuelled violence and discrimination amongst LGBTQI+ individuals. In addition, the horrific events that took place during the #endsars protest in Nigeria amid COVID-19 pandemic has further marginalised the LGBTQI+ individuals living in Nigeria.
NGANGA gives us a reason to come together and unite as a family and embrace living our truth.
HOW CAN YOU HEELP US
For this year's NGANGA, One Action Foundation is taking a bold step to host this event at a secured location with a maximum of 50 physical Participants (this is in line with the Nigerian Government COVID-19 rules and regulations). The event will also include awards to acknowledge groups and individuals who are risking their lives to ensure our voices are constantly heard. In addition, we will include activities from other LGBTQI+ NGOs, LGBTQI+ individuals, Allies and other special guests. We also intend to stream the event online via Zoom, Clubhouse and YouTube. This will provide an opportunity for Nigerian LGBTQI+ folks in the diaspora as well as other well-wishers who are interested to virtually attend the event.
