Help Gabriel recover from brain surgery

Hi everyone,

My name is Peter and I am writing this on behalf of my son Gabriel who is having brain surgery on Tuesday, January 23rd.

In July of 2023 a 15.5 x 20.7mm tumor was discovered on the left side of Gabriel's brain, specifically in the lateral temporal lobe which controls language, speech, processing information, memories and emotions.

Last month, December 2023, Gabriel underwent a successful biopsy of the tumor. It came back from the labs as a grade 2 astrocytoma. Because he is only 23 and has so much life in front him, his surgeon wants to remove the entire tumor immediately so that it doesn't advance to grade 3 where it has the tendency to spread.

As hard and scary as everything has been so far, we are grateful that we discovered it when we did because we have an opportunity to stop this thing in its tracks.

The details of the surgery that we know of are that there will be a hole about the size of 2 quarters opened up on the left side of his skull to be able to remove the tumor and the hole will be permanently filled with a titanium plate of some sort.

If everything goes smoothly, the recovery time is 1 month. We are hopeful for the best case scenario based on how well Gabriel did with the biopsy but with something like this there is obviously a greater risk involved. We also don't know what the next steps will be after this and that will be based on how well the surgery goes, what they find out afterwards and how well Gabriel does. We are just taking what's in front of us and doing our best to handle one thing at a time.

Gabriel's mother Kristi is an experienced hospice worker and will be spending the duration of his recovery caring for him.
