Help Gaynor recover from a stroke & disability

Donation protected
This is a message and plea on behalf of Gaynor. Gaynor needs your help.

On the morning of the 20th October this year, Gaynor was found semi-conscious on the floor by her brother and nephew following a burst aneurysm in the right side of her brain. She was totally paralysed down her left side and was unable to speak; holding her head with her one arm that was able to move and in excruciating pain.

The ruptured aneurysm caused a brain haemorrhage leading to a severe and debilitating stroke. Gaynor was carried into a vehicle by her family and rushed to hospital where she underwent lifesaving treatment, including brain surgery to clip the aneurysm in order to try and stop further damage to her brain.
The week following, Gaynor was placed into an induced medical sleep and was kept alive with machines that helped her breathe, amongst other things. Whilst on life support, the family were told that there was only a 50/50 chance Gaynor would survive.

Gaynor is still seriously ill, nevertheless there is hope. The brain can learn to make new connections using healthy areas and bypass the injured parts, however this is only possible, to a high degree, with intensive private rehabilitation. It is proven that people who can afford to continue a high level of rehabilitation privately show astonishing levels of recovery. (Source: Andrew Marr: My Brain and Me – BBC documentary on stroke recovery).

Gaynor has always strived to be independent in every aspect of her life. Prior to Gaynor having a stroke, she was struggling with multiple sclerosis, but maintained a house on her own and doted on her three-year-old German shepherd, Lacey. Now, it may be several years, but with continued and intense rehabilitation along with the correct equipment, it may be possible for her to regain parts of her independence, speech and understanding again. This would allow her to enjoy life with her family once more. Through proper and continued treatment, she could regain the ability of her left side and even learn to walk again.

The family will spare any money they have to put towards the cost of Gaynor’s recovery; however this is where we need help from you. Without your support and additional ongoing treatment Gaynor’s recovery will stall and she will remain with debilitating disabilities.

The price of high-quality private treatment is exceptionally costly however we want to give Gaynor the best chance of recovery and that’s why we are asking for your support. The first two years following a stroke is the most critical recovery time and when the most progress can be made.

Additional intensive ongoing rehabilitation costs a minimum of £4500 pound per 12 weeks with a two-year cost totalling a minimum of £36,000. Specialist equipment for Gaynor will separately cost up to £5000.

With your support Gaynor will be able to get life changing treatments and equipment such as:- Stroke / neurological rehabilitation and physiotherapy; Speech and language therapy; Cognitive behaviour therapy; Body weight support treadmill treatment; Electronic stimulation therapy; High quality mobility aids (electronic scooters / chairs etc) and Hydrotherapy just to name a few

The death rate within five to ten years following this type of stroke is exceptionally high. Gaynor urgently needs to recover and to the highest level she can to enjoy the last few years of her life, as independently as possible, with her family and friends.

Stepping Hill Hospital and Salford Royal NHS Hospital have done a miraculous job of saving Gaynor's life and keeping her alive, however services have never been more stretched and simply cannot meet the requirements of major stroke patients to provide ongoing intensive rehabilitation once patients are back home. Recovery after a stroke can be a long and difficult process. We urgently need your support to ensure Gaynor is able to access additional intensive ongoing rehabilitation that she will desperately need.

Gaynor will be relying on your donations, as a stroke survivor to fund much needed private treatment and rebuild her life. On behalf of Gaynor I want to thank you all for your continued support and for any donations, and I hope one day soon that Gaynor will be able to thank you herself.
