Help Georganna & Calvin bring Phillip HOME!!

My name is Kim Schmidlin and I am raising money to help friends and co-workers Georganna and Calvin Gaines with expenses associated with getting their precious baby, Phillip, home for the first time since his birth 16 months ago.

In May 2022, Georganna’s water broke at 20 weeks pregnant so she was admitted to UNC’s Antepartum Unit to closely monitor mom and baby until Phillip’s arrival. Georganna and Calvin, both Physical Therapists, were out of work during this tenuous time. In July ‘22, after 9 weeks at UNC Hospital, Georganna gave birth to Phillip at 30 weeks gestation. Due to underdeveloped lungs, Phillip required a breathing tube and ventilator support after birth. He was very critically ill for the first month of life and maxed out on interventions to treat his lung disease and to sustain life. The family was encouraged to remain nearby and to spend as much time with their son as they could. It was unknown if Phillip would survive. Thankfully, he became more stable with time and growth but has remained on the ventilator.

Geoganna and Calvin moved into the Ronald McDonald House to remain close to Phillip in the early months. In September ‘22 Calvin went to work as a physical therapist while Georganna remained in Chapel Hill every day to be with Phillip.

Phillip is a beautiful 16 month old who has defied so many odds. He is still a patient in UNC’s NICU and relies on a g-tube, trach, and ventilator for survival but he has stabilized enough he can receive his medical treatment at home. His medical team anticipates discharge home before Christmas. WHAT AN AMAZING CHRISTMAS PRESENT!

Phillip will go home with extensive medical needs since he still relies on a ventilator.

The money raised through this Go Fund Me will go directly to Georganna and Calvin to assist with Phillip’s care needs. He will require 24/7 supervision at home so the family is hopeful to obtain nursing coverage to assist. They are having to make many changes to their home to accommodate his medical needs.

Georganna and Calvin have shouldered the financial burdens throughout Phillip’s extended stay but I know many friends and family look forward to helping them as we celebrate this HOMECOMING!!!
