Help George Clarke buy an Electric Wheelchair
Donation protected
Hi, I am Tracey Clarke, mum to George who this fund raiser is for. This fund riser is to raise money to help towards buying an electric wheelchair (travel version) to aide George with living a quality independent life. This is only available on the NHS when George can no longer use his legs.
For those that are unaware of the history, George's illness started to show signs a couple months following the death of his dad. Unfortunately we were entering the COVID pandemic and George was studying for his A levels.
When we finally got a GP appointment he was immediately referred to a neurological consultant. George's first appointment with the neurologist was a telephone conversation but he referred George's for an urgent MRI scan which thankfully came back clear.
Over the following 18 months George continued to see his neurologist who continued to run tests. In October 2021 a diagnosis was finally made and unfortunately it confirmed that George has a rare, degenerative, non curable, hereditary, neurological disease called Friedrich Attaxia. If you do decide to read about this, please read the NHS version.
It doesn't make pleasant reading. George is currently waiting for various other appointments with other specialists at this particular time.
I am currently being tested to see if I have the disease but both myself and George's dad carried the gene to pass the disease to George. George's sister won't be tested until she turns 18.
George is currently 21 years old and hasn't left the home in 2 yrs except to attend medical appointments and to visit family.
This is because George needs assistance to walk and cannot walk very far before his legs spasm.
He has now got his head around this disease and would like to start living again, being independent and socialising with friends. The NHS wheelchair does not allow this because he is still dependent upon someone assisting him.
Our home is currently having simple supports put in place but will need much larger adaptations in the future.
So, those that know me will know how extremely difficult it is for me to ask for help, especially financial help, but, this isn't for me, it is for George. So, if anybody would like to help raise enough money to purchase an electric travel wheelchair, any size donation would be greatly received and both George and myself thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
