Help George Semakula Get Back to His Feet!

Donation protected
Miriam and George Semakula want to sincerely thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support through your prayers, well wishes, text messages, phone calls and hospital visits following George's unexpected injury.  In late April, 2019 George traveled to Moshi, Tanzania to attend his mother's funeral. His mother, Mrs. Ruth Semakula, passed away in Minneapolis, MN on April 16th, 2019 and was laid to rest in Moshi Tanzania on April 26th, 2019. Just two days after his mother's  funeral, while walking around his neighborhood in Moshi, George was viciously attacked  in an apparent mugging attempt.   The attacker  sneaked on George from behind and  pushed him into a ditch. George fell and severely broke his left leg  and sustained an open fracture. Without 911/ emergency services infrastructure,  George laid there helpless, bleeding from his wound until  some good Samaritans came to his aid.  He was then taken to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) Hospital.  It's just by God's miracle that George is with us today. He bled so badly that his Hemoglobin (blood levels) fell from 16 to 8 g/dl. He had emergency  surgery and was hospitalized at KCMC  for 10 days before transported back to US where he was immediately admitted to Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.  He is currently still at  Duke, and has had 5 surgeries, two of which major. He is currently recuperating from his last major 10-hour surgery from 2 days ago. While at Duke his wound was found to have been infected by resistant bacteria, a situation that threatened to, potentially, end in amputation of his leg.  Sixteen antibiotics were tested to no avail. After a wide search for an effective antibiotic, an investigational drug was obtained from Japan. He was put on this medication successfully. George is still fighting to regain his  health back: he is currently managed for the intense post-surgical pains and is receiving blood transfusions to bring his blood levels back to normal. Hurting George without reason was, sadly, inhuman and criminal.  Excuse the graphic photo below taken shortly after the incident. George is a kind, friendly person with a loving heart, and he is never violent or aggressive. This very traumatic experience, however, did not take away his courage, weaken his hope, or diminish his spiritual strength. Instead of being angry or bitter, George has maintained a positive attitude and is 100% focused on recovery.   George is expected to be in the hospital for another week.  He is expected to have months of physical therapy and doctor's visits. Despite being covered by health insurance, there will be extensive out-of-pocket financial responsibilities for his extended hospital stay, all surgeries, physical therapy, rehabilitation, home-care nursing, medication, medical equipment purchases and all non-insurance-covered essential services. George will be unable to work for a while and his wife, Miriam, will likely go on Family& Medical Leave of Absence (FMLA) from work to take care of him until he gets better. With healthcare responsibilities, living expenses and loss of one income for now, George and wife, Miriam, kindly welcome any support from friends, acquaintances, relatives, family members and anyone touched by this, to help George  get back to his feet.
