Help Gerry with his Medical Expenses

On March 30th, Gerry was diagnosed with a spinal ependymoma which is a tumor that lives in his neck to upper back. For the past 3 months, it has been affecting his ability to walk, use the restroom, and do many things we all take for granted. After months of misdiagnoses and dealing with a cumbersome healthcare system, he finally has a surgery date of May 18th.

 

Not only is his condition rare (only 18,000 people in the US have it) but the surgery is also high risk. The day-long surgery involves removing his vertebrae, extracting the tumor, and bolting his spine together. Post-surgery, he might go through chemotherapy if the tumor is cancerous. At the very least, he will be bedridden for a month. In the following months, he will need to re-learn how to walk and have physical therapy for six months to a year.

 

To help make life a lot easier, his friends are asking the community for donations. This will help cover the out-of-pocket medical expenses he will be experiencing for the next couple of years. El pasado 30 de Marzo, Gerry fue diagnosticado con “Ependimoma Espinal”, un raro tumor que se aloja en la parte superior de atrás de su cuello, el cual, los últimos 3 meses le ha estado afectando su habilidad motora, tal como caminar, ir al baño y otros movimientos que para nosotros son de lo mas  sencillo y sin esfuerzo los hacemos. 

Después de diagnósticos fallidos y por meses batallar con nuestro incómodo y a veces ineficiente sistema de salud, por fin le han dado su fecha para su operación… Mayo 18

No nada más es rara su condición (únicamente 18,000 personas en EUA lo portan), sino también el alto riesgo de la operación; esta intervención estimada en todo un día, donde se le abrirán su vertebras,  extraerle el tumor, se le deberá ajustar y unir de nuevo su espina dorsal. 
Luego de su intervención quirúrgica, tal vez se le aplique quimioterapia si el tumor es canceroso, aún así estará postrado en cama por aproximadamente 30 días; en los meses siguientes tendrá que aprender a caminar y a realizar otras actividades motoras de nuevo con terapias físicas por espacio de 6 a 12 meses 

Para intentar hacer su vida más llevadera, sus amigos están pidiendo donaciones a la comunidad, esto podría ayudar para cubrir gastos médicos y soportar su bienestar al no tener fondos económicos para subsistir por un largo tiempo
