Help Get Kai's Brain Back on Track

Donation protected
Hi friendly folks,

I have created this GoFundMe campaign to raise some money to help pay for my nephew's medical expenses, as well as travel & accommodation expenses for my sister and him while he is attending appointments and treatments.

My sister (Flickerine) and my nephew (Kai) live in Ucluelet BC, a lovely community right on the Pacific which doesn't have much in the way of health care. Here's their story:

Kai had a severe viral infection in October 2017, and has been suffering from a debilitating brain condition ever since. Kai has been in a disassociated state- "zoned out", in a bubble. He says he feels like he is not really here. He was exhausted for about 3 months afterwards and started to feel less so when Flickerine upped his vitamin D and took a few inflammatory things out of his diet. Kai's brain state hasn't changed, though, it is constant: his memory is affected; he has a harder time planning and organizing than he used to; he finds school and social interactions difficult; he can't even really relax and enjoy his free time. He hates it and has gotten increasingly depressed as it has gone on and on. Kai has had extensive blood tests, an MRI, and has been to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist, but they have gotten no answers from the medical community thus far.

Kai has had some success with a naturopath in Victoria who specializes in psychoneuroimmunology. She is helping to support Kai's immune function and his digestive health, and will be doing Lyme disease testing in the near future.

Flickerine has also found a Psychologist in Vancouver, a leader in the field of psychoneurophysiology, and Kai recently started treatment with Neurotherapy. Flickerine has read his book and he has had success treating people in Kai's situation before, so Flickerine is hopeful. It is expensive, and Flickerine only has a little bit of coverage through work.

Flickerine works at both the local library and post office, but is having trouble making ends meet as a single parent with a  teenager in general, much less also finding a way to pay for the expense of treatment and travelling to each of Victoria for the Naturopath (an overnight trip), and Vancouver for the Psychologist (minimum one night trip).

At this point, Flickerine is likely taking an  unpaid leave from both of her jobs so they can spend a month or so in Vancouver doing treatment without having the stress, expense, and consumption of time involved in travelling back and forth from Ucluelet. And this is where you come in! Can you help Flickerine & Kai make this process a little less onerous? Every donation helps, no matter the size; if we can make the money worry less of a factor for Flickerine, she can focus on doing what needs to be done to get Kai well.

Thanks for reading through Kai's story!
