Help Grandma Lupe Marez with Life after Fire
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Sam Jordan. I am fundraising for my Grandma Lupe. On Sunday January 24, we received a call that Grandma Lupe’s house was on fire. She is a 89 year old widow who was alone at the time. We are unsure what the full cause of the fire was, and it is still under investigation. While Grandma Lupe was almost asleep, she saw the curtain in her room was on fire. She tried to put the fire out herself when the curtain fell on the ground. The fire began to engulf the whole room. My grandma tried to save her house to the point of exhaustion. She was lucky her neighbor spotted the fire and rescued her and her chihuahua, Chuchi. She waited at his house until the firefighters came. By the time my family got to the house, they found Grandma being checked out by paramedics. The paramedics found soot in her lungs and told us that she should be taken to the hospital. By the grace of God the X-rays showed there was no smoke in her lungs, but Grandma Lupe was devastated she lost almost everything in her home.
Grandma Lupe has lived in that house since the 1960s. It’s where she raised five children, three of her own and two she took in and adopted, with her now deceased husband. Grandma is a devout Catholic who tries her best to love God and her neighbor. She and Grandpa served their community by volunteering at the San Luis Rey Mission and taking in and feeding all who were in need. Anyone could tell from the pictures and dusty kid-made crafts around her home that she was a mother and grandmother to many. We all have countless memories of the times spent there — my favorite was sitting in front of the tv on her recliner in her room, eating Chips Ahoy and sipping coffee in the world’s smallest mug. Unfortunately all of these things were lost in the fire.
For my grandma, this house was one of the few things she had left. She has lost a lot in her life. She’s the last remaining member of her immediate family — all her siblings have passed away. She lost two children to cancer, and lost her husband as well. Yes material things are temporary, however much of what she lost held joyful memories. She now no longer has her wall of pictures, the presents her grandchildren made for her, none of grandpa’s clothes, and of course the mass produced letter from Barack and Michelle Obama to the senior citizens. She is struggling coping with the loss.
For the foreseen future, she will be staying with my parents, her daughter and son in-law. The money that you donate will help to replace some of the things she lost. As you can see in the pictures my grandma loves to be stylish, and she will have to replace all of her clothes, shoes, jewelry, and purses. It will also be used to pay for damages to the house, as well as make our home handicap accessaible. My grandma did not have fire insurance and is living on Social Security — which means almost all of the financial burden will fall on our family.
We are creating this GoFundMe to reach out and give you the opportunity to give back to a woman whose given to so many. If you are unable to give at this time, we ask that you share, leave comments, pray, write letters, and try to get ahold of our family to speak to Grandma Lupe and lift up her spirit. Our family needs all the love and support we can get right now, and I know Grandma would love to hear from her friends and family as she is mourning at this time.
If you know Grandma Lupe, you know she loves to dance, wear leopard print, and loves to spend time with her family and the Lord. Please help as you can. God bless.
