Please help Grassy Narrows First Nation prepare for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to the ongoing mercury crisis, Grassy Narrows is at an increased danger from the virus.
There are no known cases of COVID-19 so far but people are on high-alert and the community is going into a six-day per week lock-down and only allowed out on Wednesdays, indefinitely.
Let’s show Grassy Narrows that we care. Please donate if you can.
All donated funds will be sent to the Grassy Narrows Chief and Council. This fundraiser is authorized by Chief Rudy Turtle. Funds will be used by Chief and Council to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some people in the community have been going out on the land to collect medicinal plants so that people can improve their immune systems and can fight off possible infections. These people are making the medicines available to the community.
People are also in need of food. Given limited food availability on the reserve, community members need to go out on the land to harvest wild foods. They also need non-perishable food for the long-term.
Grassy Narrows used to be a self-sufficient community with plentiful wild foods and 95% employment, mostly as fishing guides and commercial fishers. When the fishery was shut-down due to mercury contamination in 1970, most people in the community lost their primary source of food, and their livelihoods. To this day, unemployment is exceedingly high and most people do not have the ability to pay for extra expenses.
Your financial contribution will be very meaningful at this time to show Grassy Narrows that we have their backs.
Grassy Narrows people have been leaders in the movement for Indigenous self-determination and for environmental justice.
Thank you for remembering Grassy Narrows during these stressful times.
Sincerely,
Grassy Narrows Solidarity Toronto
