Help Greg Return Home

Hi, my name is Kathy Nunez and I am fundraising for my husband Greg Nunez.

At age 11 he has diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

In 2021, he was diagnosed with end stage renal disease - as a complication that resulted from his diabetes.

From then, he was placed on a kidney and pancreas transplant list in Boston and started dialysis to manage his kidneys. While we were waiting, we decided to try our luck by placing him on organ transplant lists out of state.

On August 3, 2023 - after a roller coaster journey of close calls and false alarms, at 39 years old, Greg finally got the news he was waiting his entire life to hear - there was a viable kidney and pancreas transplant for him in Orlando. He underwent surgery successfully, and could finally breathe.. He had his second lease on life. For the first time since he was a child - he was free of diabetes, and all of the complications it had imposed on his life.

Unfortunately, his moment of happiness was short lived. On August 5, 2023, two days after his life altering transplants - Greg suffered a hemorrhagic stroke that rendered him unable to breathe without mechanical ventilation, unable to swallow, and unable to move his extremities. Since then, his hospital course has been complicated by pneumonia, shunt displacement, and various other surgeries - seven surgeries total. At present, Greg has now been in the neurological intensive care unit for two months while a variety of family members have helped to keep him company.

While I have tried to remain strong and stable for our family, our two children - I am facing the reality that I cannot do this on my own financially. I am humbly requesting assistance to get Greg back home to Boston to continue his care. We are grateful for the care he has received in Orlando... but we cannot keep him there. He has an amazing team of healthcare professionals in Boston, as well as family and friends who can lend more help while we are home. Funds would be used to med-flight him from Orlando to Boston, and for his accruing medical expenses.

Greg is the most special person I have ever had the honor of knowing. We were friends before we got married, and I always adored his kindness, his tenacity, his sense of humor, and the way he lights up a room when he enters it. He is a doting father, husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He fully shows up.

I have been by his side as he has struggled with his diabetes. It has affected every aspect of his life, causing high blood pressure and artery corrosion which lead to him having his stroke. He has faced all his adversity with a smile on his face, and has always put others first. He inspires me to be a better person everyday.

Please, if you are able, help Greg and our family fund his way back home so he can start his recovery process within his community. Every penny counts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your donations, and please share with your friends.
