Greg Voce Eagle Project for the American Legion
Hi, my name is Greg Voce, and I am a Boy Scout in Troop 97 located in New City, NY. I am raising money for my Eagle Scout project for the American Legion Post 1682 in New City, NY. It will recognize the Four Chaplains who perished on the Dorchester on February 3rd, 1943, during World War II. As the ship was traveling to Greenland with more than 900 military passengers, it was torpedoed by a U-Boat, sinking it in less than 30 minutes. The Four Chaplains selflessly gave up their life vests to others after the supply ran out, and they could be seen linking arms and praying as the ship submerged. The Four Chaplains all had different faiths: George Fox (Methodist), Alexander Goode (Jewish), Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), and John Washington (Roman Catholic). My great-grandfather was one of the over 600 victims who perished on this ship.
To recognize the heroic acts of the Chaplains, I will be installing a memorial plaque on a flat-faced boulder, and I will landscape the surrounding area. This will remind and educate the members and public of the sacrifices of the Four Chaplains since not many people are aware of them.
All funds raised will be used for my project, and all additional funds will be donated to the American Legion Post 1682. I would greatly appreciate any donations to help me fulfill my Eagle Project.
