In the midst of discovering a cancer diagnosis SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma), we were doing home improvements on our home. The pressure from incoming bills and payment from medical treatments, we were forced to divert home improvement funds and savings for medical expenses. In the process we have had to cancel, the progress of current construction repairs due to the medical needs, medication, lodging and treatments. Being we live 200 miles away, we have incurred unforeseen away from home living expenses and sacrificing home pets due to not being able to have them with us.
Steven is a disabled Veteran of 26 years who fell off a ladder back in August and broke his shoulder. This fall sent him to the hospital and while there Steven felt a marble-sized lump as he rubbed his neck after the fall. He mentioned it to the doctor as they checked out his shoulder and the doctors fixed up his shoulder and decided to send him to the Saginaw VA Hospital for a biopsy. It was there that he was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Head/Neck Cancer). The plan was to start chemo and radiation right away at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but his shoulder needed healing time for him to be able to undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Steve and his wife are both in Ann Arbor starting his first week of chemotherapy and radiation.
This issue is the medical insurance does not cover all expenses and does not cover his lodging expenses, his permanent home Mortgage,or home improvement loan payments due monthly, one credit card payment, and utilities. This couple lives in Houghton Lake, both on fixed Disability income. The drive alone is 200 miles one way. The gas and wear and tear on their 2011 vehicle is a worry for them and they realized they just needed to stay in continuous temporary lodging. (Not to mention as treatment continues, we tend to be more worn out and traveling can be tough when winter approaches).
Steven's treatment will be from 5-12 weeks depending on how he responds. We are asking for assistance with financial burden and medical expenses. It would be such a benefit to Steve and his family to support his outcome for treatment. We do not qualify for any resource support due to the fact that we have no dependents in our home. We hope you can consider your support, we would much appreciate any assistance. Thank you very much and God Bless for any support. Steven and Shelia
