Help Hance Boring with Cancer Treatment

Donation protected
We are Meghan and Ricky Garcia, and have put this GoFundMe together for Hance Boring. We have taught Hance, his father Ray, and his sister Tanner for the last 13 years. Hance is more than just a student to us; he has become a part of our family.

We’re asking that you take the time to hear their story and pass it along to anyone you think would be willing to help. We are a strong community, and I know that when one of our own is hurting, we will come together and do what we can to help out. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us, and we thank you for any amount of donation you can contribute.

Here’s a little about Hance and the amazing Boring family. Below the next section is more information on Hance’s diagnosis and treatments written by Hance’s mom, Amanda.

---------------------------------------------------------

Many of you have seen Hance grow up and have known Hance and his family for many years, whether it be one of them teaching class, judging tests, helping out with Kids’ Night Outs, summer camps, or even staying after class to help give one-on-one attention to any students in need. The Borings are a huge part of our school and helped to make the school what it is today. Many of you know through experience that the Borings are always willing to help in or out of the Dojang. They bring such positive energy to the school, and you know right away when you see them walk through the door that it’s going to be a great class.

Hance is an excellent friend, teacher, and mentor. He is always happy to help, whether it is to help move something heavy, work with you on martial arts, or even just sit and talk with you if you have something you need to share and get off of your chest. He is the kind of guy you feel comfortable with and a bit safer just knowing he is around. He is always supportive and is a kind soul. With the Borings, it’s rare to see any of them in a bad mood and seeing them walk into our school can make a rough day a little bit brighter.

Hance’s father Ray is someone everyone at the school knows. He is the kind of guy that as soon as you meet, you know you have met someone special. And Ray definitely has a way of making you feel special just by talking with him. This is a trait Hance has picked up and I look forward to seeing him share that with many more people as he gets older.

His parents are some of our closest friends, and they really are a part of our family. And this diagnosis has really seemed so wrong to hit such a kind group of people. Hance’s mother, Amanda, just recently completed part of her treatment for breast cancer, and is currently (thank goodness!) cancer free. She continues to take medication and get injections to (hopefully) prevent the cancer from coming back. So, this sweet family full of wonderful people has already seen more than their fair share of hardship.

When Ray told us about Hance’s cancer diagnosis, we were stunned that they were hit again, and so soon. Listening to Ray and hearing his pain, it just didn’t seem fair. Hance is a senior, just recently turned 18 years old, and is about to set off on his journey into adulthood and the rest of his life. He should be looking forward to college, a career, and all the freedom and excitement of being grown and on your own for the first time.

So, since cancer can derail the lives of an entire family and can make even the toughest people feel helpless (and Ray and Amanda are a couple of the toughest people we’ve ever met), we want to do anything we can to ease their lives at this time. From what we know, it’ll be at least a year of treatments and bills. The potential future costs are unknown after chemo and radiation. Cancer treatments are expensive, but if we can help alleviate this one strain, they can save more energy and focus on positive progress.

Please help us take this burden from them and make this heavy time a little bit lighter. Thank you all so much for your help!

Here is more information on Hance’s cancer diagnosis and some words from his mother, Amanda:

My son, Hance, was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma on November 2, 2022. I got the phone call on October 14 that no parent ever wants to receive: “your son has a tumor growing on his sacrum and it looks like cancer”. Hance has been treated for over a year for something else that could have caused the symptoms he was having. Since the symptoms persisted, an MRI further evaluating his issues found the cancer.

Ray, Tanner, Hance, and I were understandably shocked by this development. We never suspected that Hance, an active and healthy 18-year-old could have cancer.

The next couple of weeks after the diagnosis were a whirlwind of tests, x-rays, and procedures. We took Hance to meet with an oncologist on November 4, who said he would need a year of chemotherapy followed by radiation. A PET scan was done on November 9, to check for spread, and the results are still pending. On November 11, Hance had a port inserted for chemotherapy administration and will begin chemo on November 14. He will have one day of chemo, one week off, then five days in a row of chemo, two weeks off, and then the cycle starts again.

Hance will be unable to finish his senior year "in person" at school. His oncologist said if he felt well enough, he could attend class in person as long as he wore a mask. His high school counselor and principal have been very supportive. Hance has been transitioned to online classes, but will be allowed to go on campus when he feels up to it. He can still attend school functions, such as prom, and can walk the stage at graduation. Though he has in-person options, knowing that he’ll mostly be confined at home has been hard on Hance.

I am a breast cancer survivor (1.5 years cancer free), get labs, X-rays, and monitoring every 3 months, and receive ongoing treatment to prevent recurrence. Even with health insurance, the yearly out of pocket costs for Hance and my care will high. Any donations will help cover the additional costs of Hance's cancer treatment. Thank you for anything you share with us, and for your time in reading our story.
