Help Hans and Heidi recover from bushfire

It’s been a month now since a bushfire tore through Hans and Heidi’s place at the foot of Mt Lindesay, a place which is not only their home and livelihood but a hearth from which they’ve shared warmth and love with people from all over the world, and a farm they've built up with their own hands working from dawn till dusk every day for the last twenty years. 

As the fire approached, Hans refused to leave. (If you know Hans at all, at this point in the story you’ll be thinking ‘of course he did!’) Those of us who weren’t nearby watched with trepidation and not a little fear, keeping in touch by phone as long as possible. Fortunately, along with a team of about forty RFS firefighters and volunteers, they saved the house and sheds, although they very nearly lost it the following day when a spot fire broke out while Heidi was home alone! For the next few days nobody slept much, for a couple of weeks following the main fire the air inside and out was scratchy with smoke and ash, and even a month later we’re all alert to the slightest whiff of smoke or change in the wind, because even though the fire front has passed their property, the fire is still active and the amount of dry fuel around is still considerable. 

There are still lots of stumps and logs quietly smouldering in hidden spots in the bush, every couple of days you can hear a tree give up the struggle and fall down somewhere, and while the forest is just a brown ghost of itself and nobody knows whether the tree plantations will survive, they’ve been able to move around the property and assess the scale of the damage.

As I said, the house and sheds suffered minimal damage - the house lost some shade screens which melted during the secondary fire on the day after the main event, and is of course full of ash and dust even into the backs of the cupboards. The water pump at the dam was burnt, along with every piece of water pipe that was above ground, and so were a number of generators. But the biggest and most daunting part of the damage is that every one of the over 20km of fencing in and around the property is completely unsalvageable. Now I know that dad is only seventy and still feels like a spring chicken, but even the indomitable Hans is finding the idea of this task, not to mention the vast cost of it (estimated at about $300 000!) a bit of a challenge. 

This is why I'm asking for your help today. If anyone feels like they can offer even a small donation to this fencing fund, I know it will make a huge difference to Hans and Heidi - not just to the physical task of rebuilding, but just as much through giving them the feeling that they don't have to do this alone, that people everywhere care and are willing to help.

Und nochmal, für alle, die nicht auf Englisch denken


Es ist jetzt ein ganzer Monat her, dass bei Hans und Heidi ein Waldbrand alles auf den Kopf gestellt hat. Viele von Euch kennen ihr Zuhause ja aus eigener schönen Erfahrung, denn Besuch war dort schon immer willkommen und jeder hat jederzeit von ausgezeichneter Verpflegung bis auf seelische Unterstützung alles erhalten, was ihm gefehlt hat. 

Als ihnen am 14. November die Feuerwehr mitgeteilt hat, dass das Feuer nicht mehr zu stoppen sei und sie am besten evakuieren sollten, hat Hans die Aufforderung sich in Sicherheit zu bringen abgelehnt. Er ist geblieben und hat, zusammen mit vierzig Feuerwehrleuten, den Brand bekämpft. An diesem ersten Tag konnten sie Haus, Schuppen und Gemüsegarten retten, aber die Wasserpumpe, sämtliche Wasserleitungen und ein paar Generatoren sind verbrannt, wie auch der ganze Wald rundum. Telefon und Strom waren aus. Am nächsten Tag, als vermeintlich die grösste Gefahr vorüber war, ist Heidi nach Hause gekommen. Überall brachen noch kleine Feuer aus, denn die Gefahr war keineswegs vorbei. Wenn so viele Bäume Feuer gefangen haben, dann brennen die zwangsläufig noch tage- oder wochenlang weiter, besonders wenn kein Regen in Aussicht ist und dazu noch unberechenbare Winde blasen. So hat sich auch, kaum war Heidi zu Hause angekommen, so ein Brandnest gleich neben dem Haus entfacht! Alleine, mit bloss einem kleinen Schlauch und wegen der kaputten Leitungen kaum Wasserdruck, machte sich auch Heidi zur Feuerwehrsfrau aber die Situation war aussichtslos. Gottseidank ist gerade in dem Moment Hans zurückgekommen, sie konnten mehr Hilfe holen, und wurden des Feuers mächtig. 

Mit grossem Glück kann man sagen, Hans und Heidi sind vergleichsmässig ungeschoren davongekommen: Haus und diverse Schuppen sind vom Feuer grösstenteils verschont geblieben. Aber noch heute brennen Baumstümpfe leise und unerkannt im Wald weiter. Alle paar Tage hört man einen Baum fallen, der den Kampf aufgegeben hat. Ob die Eucalyptusplantagen überleben werden, wird sich erst herausstellen wenn es wieder einmal regnet - aber das kann noch Monate dauern. Der Fluss liegt schon seit 13 Monaten trocken, der kleine Stausee, der den Gemüseanbau versorgt ist bald leer. Wasserpumpe und Leitungen wie auch ein paar Benzingeneratoren sind völlig verbrannt. 

Ausserdem, und das ist das Schlimmste, sind über 20km Zaun nicht zu retten. Diese müssen komplett neu gemacht werden, und das ist eine ungeheure Herausforderung. Ganz abgesehen vom beträchtlichen körperlichen Aufwand, sind auch die Kosten zu beachten: Zaun kostet um die 15 Dollar pro Meter.

Deshalb schreibe ich Euch heute diesen Spendenaufruf. Denn obwohl Hans ja nur siebzig ist, und immer noch jeden Tag von Sonnenaufgang bis -untergang draussen arbeitet als wäre er noch zwanzig, ist sogar für ihn diese Aufgabe überwältigend. Egal ob Ihr viel oder wenig spenden könnt, ich weiss, dass es für Hans und Heidi von enormer Bedeutung sein wird, denn sie werden Eure Anteilnahme spüren, und dadurch wissen, dass sie diesem schweren Werk nicht alleine gegenüberstehen müssen.
