Help Happy Roots Recoup From Lost Fundraisers
Tax deductible
2020 has been a tough year for many. Nonprofits are no exception. Despite losing our annual fundraiser, two annual plant sale fundraisers, and countless other fundraising events where we would have sold merchandise, raffle tickets, etc... Happy Roots has barreled though working hard to serve our community.
Since schools closed in March and we were unable to work out of school gardens, we used our grant funding and money raised to fund "Together Gardens". We created an online gardening course to educate students via their school application. Rowan-Salisbury Schools students and families were able to sign up to receive a complete home gardening kit in order to grow at home. We gifted over 100 garden kits to our community, then roughly fifty or more container garden kits.
We checked in with students over a weekly Zoom called "Family Friday Check-in" to share progress, trouble shoot, learn to prune, build trellises, and harvest. One of the most memorable meetings for us was when the high schoolers hosted a cooking demo for the younger students with some of the produce they grew. Talk about full circle! For about half of our "Together Garden" registrants, it was their first garden ever. Read more about our "Together Gardens" project in October's edition of 'Salisbury - The Magazine'. We are so extremely grateful to be featured. ( https://issuu.com/lisahumphrey4/docs/stm_october2020_crop )
Covid-19 did not stop our school and community garden projects. In fact, we were deemed essential. We still use the school gardens to grow food and continue to donate all produce to students and families in need. Since school is back in session, we have been hosting weekly gardening classes and planting for fall, currently serving eleven Rowan-Salisbury Schools and six other neighborhood and community gardens.
However, gardening constantly calls for supplies. We are also dealing with broken wheelbarrows, broken tools, deteriorating garden beds, and always trying to raise money to cover soil, lumber, seeds, hoses, and other supplies.
We usually would be able to purchase these things from fundraisers. However, since we were unable to host those this year, we're asking for your support virtually. If you would have bought an Earth Day Jam ticket, bought some plants from us, bought raffle tickets or made a donation, we would be incredibly grateful if you made that contribution now.
Thank you dear friends and supporters.
