Help Harlan have the surgery not covered on NHS
** UPDATE**
We will be deleting this page in a week but before we do just wanted to give you a quick update on what’s been happening in the last few months and also to thank each and everyone of you that have helped us get to this stage. From the bottom of our hearts ❤️❤️ THANK YOU ❤️❤️
finally after 13 months of fighting tooth and nail to get my son what he needs, being knocked back at every opportunity, hurdles all along the way, tears and feeling at rock bottom ... Today we went to Middlesbrough to see Joel Dunning (cardiothoracic surgeon) who specialises in Pectus Excavatum surgery. We haven't raised all the money we originally set out to raise if he were to have the procedure in London, BUT the great news is there are certain things Joel is able to do as an NHS patient which dramatically reduces the cost. And that means we now do have enough for the procedure and Joel is more than happy to carry out Harlans Surgery... and OMG, Can't believe I'm going to say this but we have a date!!!
Harlan will be admitted on 24th October (only 2wks away!) ... and also On Harlans 16th Birthday! He will be having the modified ravitch procedure done the following morning (25th October) Its quite invasive surgery and the recovery is a period of 3mths. We can not thank every single one of you enough for all your contributions, kind words, support & love. Finally all the fighting has paid off ... my boy is getting his surgery! Feeling very emotional, and so thankful. Harlan is over the moon.
***********
My friends son Harlan is 15yrs old and he has recently been diagnosed with a condition called Pectus Excavatum. This is where the tissue between his ribs is produced too quickly and too much causing the sternum and ribcage to grow inwards causing deformities and effecting lung function. This will also move the position of the lungs and heart. Harlan’s condition is progressing very quickly causing him to look disfigured and he is in pain and discomfort every single day. Harlan has severe special needs and deals with many struggles around this on a daily basis. To have this on top to deal with is also effecting his mental health and quality of life.
Harlan needs surgery to correct this but unfortunately our consultant has informed us that the NHS no longer fund the procedure he needs as they class this more as a cosmetic procedure. He has now put us in touch with a clinic in London who will perform the surgery he needs and aftercare but we are now in a position where we need to raise the funds so he can have this treatment. He will need two surgical procedures, consultations, scans, xrays, follow ups and aftercare. Plus travel and stays to and from London. We are asking if anyone is willing to help raise funds as my friends son needs this for his physical and mental wellbeing. I can not believe the NHS will allow a 15yr old boy to be in pain and discomfort everyday, to allow his quality of life to be effected and to allow him to become disfigured. Please please help by donating however much or little you can. Thankyou so much.
