When one hears his name it’s fair to say that they automatically think of an outgoing, fun, caring and generous man with his arms outstretched, helping his community, family, and island neighbors alike.
In early December, Joe faced a life-altering moment when he suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on the entire left side of his body. He was urgently med-flighted from Martha's Vineyard to Mass General, Joe successfully underwent surgery, but the aftermath revealed a complex series of health challenges.
Doctors discovered that the stroke was a result of a calcified piece of an infection growing on Joe's heart valve that had broken off and caused a clot in his head. Twelve days in the ICU recovering and weighing surgery versus stroke rehabilitation led him to Spaulding Boston, where he bravely embarked on a challenging journey to regain use of his arm and leg.
However, adversity struck again on Christmas morning as Joe suffered a heart attack. Transported back to Mass General, he faced yet another emergency - the discovery of a brain aneurysm. Emergency surgery was performed, highlighting the resilient spirit that defines Joe.
Amidst recovery, further consultations unrevealed a major deterioration of his heart valve, due to the infectious growth. Choosing courage and determination, Joe opted for Spaulding once more, aiming to build strength before the necessary open-heart surgery. Unfortunately, another cardiac complication arose during rehab, leading to the inevitable conclusion that surgery couldn't be postponed any longer. At the end of January, Joe underwent a successful open-heart surgery, removing the infected valve and paving the way for a healthier future. During this recovery he has worked tirelessly, with multiple therapy sessions each day, to regain the use of his left arm and leg. Joe was transferred in early March, 3 months after the stroke, to Martha's Vineyard Hospital's inpatient rehabilitation.
Now, our dear friend, father, husband, brother, cousin, neighbor, Joe, continues on his long recovery. This journey has taken an emotional and financial toll. The mounting medical bills, rehabilitation costs and home modifications have created a financial burden that is too heavy for Joe to bear alone.
As his family supports and encourages him, they are also thinking of what preparations and alterations need to be made to accommodate his new needs at home. Our goal is to alleviate this burden and help Joe focus on healing. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful impact on his journey to recovery. Your support will cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, home health aides and provide peace of mind during this challenging time.
On behalf of the Capobianco family, we extend our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, prayers, and thoughtfulness received. Your generosity during this challenging time means the world to Joe and his family.
