My friend Marnie was struck by a sledder while playing with her children in the snow on December 29.
Her ambulance ride and emergency room treatment count towards her $7500 2018 health insurance deductible, and sadly all follow up, including diagnostics and an impending surgery, will count towards a brand new 2019 $7500 out of pocket limit.
She has already used her $1000 emergency fund to cover the first bills and is trying to figure out how to handle the remaining payments without jeopardizing her family’s security.
Marnie is my co-worker and a hard-working, committed employee of the Whidbey Institute, as well as a community advocate and a volunteer for social justice projects. She is also a mother of three with two children still at home and one off to college.
Marnie estimates her out of pocket costs for this injury to be a total of $15,000 by the time it’s done, plus many hundreds of dollars in incidental costs. Her recovery time is estimated to take 6-12 months.
Marnie’s work at the Whidbey Institute is invaluable. Her generous spirit and warm demeanor constantly uplift and remind me of how I want to walk in the world. She always has time to answer a question, offer a kind word, or listen with focused attention.

The details of Marnie’s diagnosis include ruptured tendons and ligaments requiring surgical repair, a dislocated and fractured patella, a bone fragment trapped between the patella and underlying structures, and a severely damaged meniscus. Surgery will probably take place in February, as her surgeon can’t operate until the swelling is reduced.
