Help Hearth Ground recover from flooding
Donation protected
My dear parents, Yia and Nick, have just experienced the shock of having a major flood wreak havoc across their beloved property, Hearth Ground - 60 acres of magical bushland dedicated to caring for country and wildlife. Hearth Ground’s ethos is environmental conservation and offering space for community to connect and to heal.
Like many families across NSW/QLD, we're all in shock. Water has never been known to come this high in living history. It came extremely quickly and hit hard. This comes after Hearthground experienced flooding last year, and the bushfires the year before. This flooding has sadly undone an enormous amount of recovery work and infrastructure at Hearth Ground. The scale of the clean up is enormous. The Red Tent is badly damaged, water came right into their home, caravan, Community Shed, the Sound Lounge and the Turtle Truck… roads into the property have been destroyed/damaged.
For those who have been to Hearthground or who know my parents, you're likely to have experienced the beauty of this land along with Yia and Nick's hospitality, warmth, generosity and community spirit. It is deeply saddening to see the impact on them and the land they care for.
Much has been lost already, including 3 sheds, Akael's car, the ride on mower, dad's computer, gardens, personal items, etc. And so much still needs to be assessed (e.g. dad's car, pumps, generators, batteries, washing machine, power tools, etc).
So many people have reached out to ask how they can help. If you feel called and are in a position to support, funds would really help Yia and Nick get back on their feet and replace much of what was lost.
If you'd like to contribute in other ways, we'd also appreciate support with upcoming working bees (dates TBC) if you are in a position to help when it's safe. Sharing this post with your networks is also a great help.
With so many people in need up north up Lismore way, across the Hawkesbury and beyond, we are honestly grateful for any support and so appreciative of the outpouring of love and care we have received already.
Just a couple of days after the floodwaters subsided, Yia shared this message:
"The damage hmm it is just stuff hey in the big scheme of things but I am truly sad that stuff that was stored here for the kids is effed. I as yet can't deal with looking at all the damage and just dealing with cleaning the mud and trying to stop the house from smelling.
Nick and I have endured heaps before and we will get through. In amongst it all, there have been moments of humour generosity awe and totally humbled by Nature. We are alive not being bombed and have the love of you all holding us strong."
