Help Heather buy a Wheelchair Van
Donation protected
We're trying to raise money for Heather, who is in dire need of a wheelchair van for her two grown sons. Both men are wheelchair-bound due to their mobility issues, and at present, are unable to leave the house.
Both boys were diagnosed in their early teens with a rare, inherited, complex immune disorder called Chediak-Higashi Syndrome (CHS). Their ocular albinism, easy bruising, loss of sensation in their arms and legs, imbalance and tendency to fall led Heather to The National Institute of Health in Maryland, where they were diagnosed in 2008. The boys are enrolled in a study there in hopes of helping to find a cure for this disorder. They are admitted to the hospital at the NIH every year for the progression of their disease to be monitored.
CHS is a rare disorder, with an estimated incidence of <1 in 1,000,000. Less than 500 cases have been reported worldwide. Research into this disorder is desperately needed.
Due to the rapid progression of neurological symptoms, both young men must use power wheelchairs to get around. But they are unable to transfer from wheelchair to car, making it impossible for them to leave home. And they can no longer get to the NIH for their yearly checkups, which are also valuable to the search for a cure.
Please help us raise $40,000 for the purchase of a van able to accommodate two wheelchairs simultaneously, so that these young men can resume their treatment and enjoy some freedom of movement.
