Hi, my name is Heather, and I’m reaching out for help during one of the most difficult times of my life. I never imagined I’d be in this situation, but I am now facing a wrongful accusation of illegal possession gof an assault weapon. I recently attended what was supposed to be a routine misdemeanor firearms bond arraignment. My lawyer assured me we had a strong case for dismissal. However, instead of walking away with this matter resolved, I left the courtroom with an ankle monitor and the terrifying reality that I am now facing up to two years in jail for a crime I did not commit.

As a single mother to my 3-year-old daughter, I am doing everything I can to provide for her and create a stable future. In just 11 weeks, I am set to graduate with my Master’s degree in Social Work—a huge milestone for both me and my daughter. However, this legal battle is putting everything I’ve worked so hard for at risk.

Because of my unpaid internship and coursework, I am only able to work 16 hours a week, making it nearly impossible to cover the legal fees on my own.
