Meet Helayna!
Helayna is a beautiful 9-year-old girl that radiates joy and kindness towards others. She loves to play with her puppies, cook with her mother, and attend summer camps. As any other 9 year old child, her dreams and aspirations are limitless. Unfortunately, Helayna faces a really big battle that she needs your help with.
In 2013, at the age of only 3, Helayna was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Since that time, she has fought battles that some of us could never comprehend. Her mother has worked diligently to educate her and together, they do their best to control the uncontrollable.
This past year, Helayna was finally approved to get a CGM Dexacom G6 (a monitor that continuously measures her glucose levels) which has provided her with better controlled blood sugars, freedom to be a kid and not feel as if she is defined by her disease, reduced daily finger sticks from 8 sticks per day to only 1 a day, and the life saving ability to detect out-of-range blood sugars before they become so critical!
Unfortunately, this has been a rough year for Helayna and her mother. Helayna had to switch to a new insurance policy that is not meeting her needs to keep her safe. The out-of-pocket costs, even after insurance, are astronomical.
Helayna's mother is one of the strongest, most independent women I know. She is a single mother who works overtime as a nurse every single week in order to make ends meet for Helayna. She is currently working towards earning her Bachelor's degree in Nursing because it's another way for her to provide the life Helayna so deserves.
