The situation

By the time young people are involved in high school theater, many have learned they don’t get to play certain roles - specifically romantic or loved characters - because of their bodies. Often, they turn that story inward believing that they are not lovable or worthy as they are.

Inspiration

In Spring 2020 I met with a friend to discuss Sonia Renee Taylor’s powerful book, “The Body is Not an Apology.” My friend then shared  a  dehumanizing and body-shaming experience she had with a theater director. Moved, I spoke with others who shared their stories of body-shaming experiences in the theater. Burning to investigate these experiences further, that Fall I took a documentary-making class at Antioch Now I am committed to making a feature-length documentary - Hidden Bodies: Stereotyping and Shaming of the Femme Body in American Theatre

 

 

My goal

I need to raise $20, 000 to help pay my director of photography, editor, choreographer, composer and the rest of the creative team, including the four artists featured in the documentary who have shared their stories.

 

I hope to take the film to high school, college and professional theater conferences to help counteract what femme-presenting actors feel about themselves, and challenge the theater world to be better.
