Mason & I discovered Iris on 4/30/24, while out on a walk. She ran up to the fence line (as close as her tether would allow) and jumped up to greet us - we instantly noticed her filthy, matted chest and overgrown nails. All she saw was a chance at freedom, smothering us in kisses and her tail beating hard.
She had no dog bed or shelter, but instead a kiddie-pool underneath a drooping wooden table. Walking away from her that day was one of the most heart-wrenching things l've done, but we immediately turned to each other and began making a game-plan to help this innocent, loving dog that was begging for a second chance at life.
The next day Mason went to Trader Joe's and picked up some dog treats, and started walking the block daily. After several days of visiting Iris, the home-owner pulled into the driveway while Mason was there. He explained to Mason that Iris was his sisters dog, and she no longer had the ability to care for her. Iris was kept outside because their mother, who had moved in with them, was allergic to her. He said that the family had been searching for help in rehoming Iris, but to no avail. We set up to meet with his sister 2 days later, which is when we got the full story.
Iris turned 3 in February, and is not spayed. She has never completed her first round of puppy vaccination's, nor been put on a preventative for heart-worms or any sort of parasite. In fact, Iris had not been on a walk or inside a house in over a vear. I am fortunate enough to be able to home Iris while we get her to health, but there are going to be lots of bills involved: vacinnations, spay, heart-worm test, blood & stool work, flea treatment, de-worming treatment, grooming, nails, and of course dog food & all of the toys she deserves. Iris & I thank you so much for your help!
