MY STORY
What Happened?
5 years ago I was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme and deadly brain cancer that kills 99% of its victims. I had brain surgery in July 2019 that left me with subtle yet severe condition- hemiplegia, a type of cerebral palsy. I spent 10 weeks in hospital regaining the function of my right arm and leg. I went back to university in 2021 and at roughly the same time I started Para-Triathlon (swim-bike-run).
What’s happening now?
I have recently had brain surgery which had no complications. I am now awaiting a treatment plan (December) as the samples taken from my head require time to grow, hopefully, analysis will give an indication on which chemotherapy will be effective. I had to leave the Triathlon Pathway due to reccurrence of the disease, this was upsetting as I had won the national Super Series in 2023.
How are we raising money?
Ben Douglas who has done 90% of the work and Will Wood who arguably has done less than 5% as he has roped his wife in to help... Shout out to Katie! Well, they have created an event for me called Share the Load. In this event, 4 groups of 12 will walk from Start Point lighthouse to The Tower Inn in Slapton. For the first mile, the groups will be carrying 20kg and 30kg sandbags. Then, once they get to Hallsands car park they will then be 'gifted' a 70kg stretcher which they will need to carry for 4ish miles. Finally, when they get to the memorial car park in Slapton they will be gifted a tractor tyre, a 50kg D-ball and logs. This is on top of the sandbags and stretcher. On the final stretch of the event there may be only 3 people resting whilst 9 people work. Bear in mind that the last mile or so is uphill!
I am hoping to join the 48 on the walk, but not carrying anything! I am stuck with low-level activities at the moment (walking) as the doctors don’t want the blood pressure in my brain to get too high. My future goal is to return to triathlon, but I have a long way to go. I was previously on the Pathway for a triathlon but had to leave due to my recurring disease (Brain Cancer).
What will the money be used for?
- A brace for my leg which is particularly affected.
- Neuro-physiotherapy
- Training equipment for my eventual return to triathlon
Finally, I appreciate any amount of money so any donation big or small is appreciated. But I do hope that reading will help you to understand and accept someone else’s difficulties.
