Help Jack Go Off Road
Donation protected
Our son Jack was unfortunately diagnosed with Type 2 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) aged 14 months old.
This is a type of motor neurone disease that leads to progressive loss of strength in all of his muscle groups. Although 1 in 40 people are carriers for the gene that causes SMA, thankfully it is quite rare, with between 2,000 – 2,500 children and adults in the UK living with SMA at any one time.
Jack was born fully healthy but slowly we noticed that he was not meeting his milestones and that he was no longer kicking his legs. The condition will get progressively worse and he will soon need specialised seating with full head support. Due to weak chest muscles, Jack will be at high risk of repeated chest infections.
Jack already has 75% subluxation of his hips (his hips are close to dislocating), and has started to develop a curvature of his spine.
It is not all doom and gloom though! Jack is a very happy chap and seems to be very bright for his age! The wonderful 'Mark Foundation' funded the loan of a tiny wheelchair that has meant that Jack can now move about the house by himself - causing lots of mischief!
We have had many people ask if we have set up a 'Gofundme' page and we finally thought that we would give it a go. We hope to raise enough money to allow us to fit a lift in our house that will mean that Jack can move about the house freely, rather than being confined to the downstairs only.
Any help would be absolutely fantastic and very much appreciated.
