Hi there! My name is Jada Carter and I am a first-generation, black woman who recently graduated from California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB, Fall 20') with a BS in Biology, a minor in chemistry, a concentration in molecular science, and distinction (cum laude). I have also recently been ACCEPTED into the premiere school for Agricultural Science and Technology, Wageningen (Va-huh-neen-guh) University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands, but was unable to secure a scholarship to cover tuition costs. And due to the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on college campuses in 2020, I was unable to keep my sources of income, campus jobs, that I intended to use to build my savings. As it stands I am working in childcare to save up but will still be significantly short of the 33,000 euros (about $39,900) necessary for tuition and living expenses.
But here's why you should invest in me: I have a track record of success from freshman to senior year. I was a member of multiple organizations including the LA-based Kayne Scholars Program(2016), the national McNair Scholars Program(2018), the California State University-wide Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP, 2018), and the CSUMB campus Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC, 2018). My continued association with these organizations ultimately led me down a path of research and in my 4.5 years, I was able to work on two research projects spanning multiple disciplines including an inorganic electrochemistry project at CSUMB and a plant evolutionary genetics project at NYU. From there, my involvement in the greater science community took off, and I began networking in my field at numerous networking events, from webinars, graduate school preview weekends, to national conferences. Most notably, I attended the Plants of the Future Conference in New York City hosted by NYU, Nature Plants, and Nature Genetics, and presented at the Fall 19' American Chemical Society Conference, during which I was given the honor of presenting my poster during sci-mix, an exhibition of hand-selected, exemplary projects. As a student, I was also committed to the success of other students and worked as an ambassador for UROC as well as an instructional student teaching assistant in the Fall 20' and Spring 21' semesters. Finally, I was also selected as an LSAMP 2020 PROUD Scholar, receiving the award for Outstanding Research in STEM, and as an NAACP of Monterey County Youth Black Excellence Award Recipient.
I intend to continue this hard work in my placement as a master's student in the Organic Agriculture and Agroecology double degree program at Wageningen University where I will study sustainable food system design to help our global society better adapt to the imminent effects of climate change, specifically as it relates to crop production. I will learn integrated farming techniques, farming economics, and new research techniques. I will also collaborate closely with a research professor to options for Ph.D. study in his lab once I obtain my credits. I then would like to return to the US and use what I've learned to adapt food systems in California, my home state and one of the nation's largest agricultural producers. I believe that the way we stimulate our economy and feed our residents shouldn't threaten their lives.
Thank you so much for listening and donating. The additional image is proof of my acceptance.
