August 2024 - see update in the updates section below!
Hey y’all. It’s been a while since we’ve updated everyone on James’ condition. First and foremost, thank you all for anyone who’s ever read about his medical journey, prayed for James, sent him well wishes, donated money, gave him a ride or just spent time with him. We are so grateful for you.
James was diagnosed in 2019 with a benign tumor on his spine. The tumor started causing considerable back pain and nerve pain. James elected to have the tumor removed in October 2020. We have since found out that James has a genetic condition called Noonan syndrome which predisposes him to tumors. We have also learned that James has osteoporosis and spinal deterioration, likely due to the radiation he received for his cancer at age 6, which also likely contributes to his chronic pain.
After the removal of the tumor, James was still experiencing pain and had a fall. After he fell, the pain in his foot changed. He was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) also known as Reflex sympathetic dystrophy or (RSD). We have come to understand that this disease is extremely painful, chronic in nature and there is not a cure but merely symptomatic treatment. One of the treatments that helps James the most are Ketamine infusions. Unfortunately, these infusions are not covered by health insurance and cost around $600 a month. This is one reason that we are reaching out, once again, to ask for donations to help him get the only treatment that provides relief. Aside from the pain, James has been having non-epileptic seizure-like activity. These episodes can last hours and are very strenuous on James' body. The doctors have not been able to give us the reasons why this is happening but suspect it could be related to the tumor removal, his chronic pain or the CRPS. Information about CRPS can be found at www.complextruths.org
James has been unable to work, drive, and uses a wheelchair. He is progressively becoming weaker and has lost a considerable amount of weight. He is blessed with loving friends and family that help the best we are able. He has insurance through Harris Health but the system is slow and he has not yet been able to see a pain management doctor. We also have a lawyer trying to get James disability as he has been denied twice.
James is a fighter and loves life. He doesn’t like to ask for help but unfortunately he still needs it until he can get some government assistance. Donations are appreciated but so are prayers, words of encouragement, sharing a meal or just hanging out! Thank you for taking the time to read this.
