A few months ago, I made a mutual aid fund to help me cover rent/credit card bills so I could get myself in a better financial situation, and my community came to my aid so incredibly quickly, and I was and am so grateful for that support. I was not emotionally prepared to have so many folks from so many corners of my life help me out so fast, and I genuinely still can’t believe I’m so lucky. Thank you so so so so so so so so much, even if you just read it or sent words of love and encouragement. My community gives me so much, in so many ways, and I’m so lucky to have so many folks in my life who care about me.
Unfortunately , while I am able to keep my head above water for the most part in that aspect of my finances, I am currently in a position where I need to ask for some help again. I have been desperate to be able to re-start HRT for the past couple years, but have been in a position where in order to start hormones, I require multiple medical procedures prior to even starting them, that are not covered by my insurance. Even after I begin hormones, I’ll need to save up for electrolysis and at least 1-2 surgeries, all of which will largely have to come out of pocket. As I’m nearing my 26th birthday, it’s becoming fairly important that I start my medical transition sooner rather than later, and to do so, I really need some financial assistance. Several times now, I’ve had a false start with medically transitioning due to some pre-existing conditions and financial instability. I greatly underestimated just how expensive it is to medically transition, especially as a transfeminine person.
Any funds folks contribute here will be put into a standalone savings account specifically for gender affirming medical care, with the first $500-1,000 or so going directly to a procedure I require before I can even begin hormones. After that, I’m planning to use funds towards a couple medical procedures, and hopefully at least one, if not two cosmetic surgeries. I’m still figuring a lot of this out, and navigating it on my own, so I’m hoping that this $3,000 can at least be a start, however I anticipate having to pay for a lot more out of pocket.
I really don’t want to ask for help like this- I’ve never been good at accepting general help, especially financial assistance- but it’s become clear to me at this point that I need to in order to move my life in the direction I need to.
