Help Jasmine Become a Doctor

Donation protected
Hey, y'all!

My name is Jasmine and I am finally fulfilling my dream of becoming a Doctor (of Education)! I have been accepted to Baylor University for the Learning and Organizational Change degree program for the January 2022 term.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and the Program Director for a nonprofit organization. I work diligently to address the ongoing challenges in mental health, particularly for those who are overlooked and marginally served. With this degree, I strive to bridge the gap for those who are impacted most.

My childhood focused heavily on attaining academic excellence to secure the education my parents did not have the opportunity to pursue, allowing me to become the first college graduate in my family. However, there was a lack of focus on what I later learned to be a massive component of wellness, which is the nourishment of my own mental health. Throughout my youth, I found ways to escape stressors and negative cognitions by indulging in activities that acted as bandages, not addressing the root concerns until later in life. Unfortunately, in my family, community, and culture, the concept of “mental health” treatment was not very familiar or encouraged.

While I now navigate the field professionally, I encounter individuals of varying at-risk demographics who struggle with that similar issue. The climate surrounding mental health continually intensifies, most recently due to the unique, yet collective experience of COVID-19. In the U.S., suicide remains the 2nd leading cause of death for young adults ages 10-34. Since the onset of COVID-19, mental health related emergency visits have increased 24-31% amongst youth ages 12-17. I aim to focus my professional practice and academic efforts on increasing access, decreasing stigma, and resolving this Silent Pandemic for those who find themselves in the position I was once in.

I was encouraged by my family and friends to create this fundraiser as this is such a huge opportunity that comes with a big cost! Please know that no matter the amount, your donation is very much appreciated and will be put to great use. I am also grateful for any positive thoughts, prayers, and shares.

Thank you and sending you all my best!
