Breaking Barriers: Help Make ASL Accessible for All
Who I Am & Why This Matters
My name is Jullian “JB” Mitchell, and I am a Black Deaf entrepreneur on a mission to make American Sign Language (ASL) accessible for everyone. As a founder of ASL Keep It Simple, I teach people how to communicate through sign languages – not through complicated textbook lessons, but through real conversations.
I’ve spent years teaching ASL, including at Bishop Moore Catholic High in Orlando, Fl, and I’ve seen firsthand how students struggle when they don’t have the right tools. But when given the right approach, anyone can sign confidently. I proved it with my students, and I prove it everyday through my ASL lessons on TikTok Livestream, where I’ve built a strong and engaged community.
The Challenge: Why This Fight is Personal
Let’s be real, it’s not easy for a Black Deaf guy to persuade the world how important it is to make ASL truly accessible. Society doesn’t always listen to Deaf voices, and even less so when we’re Black. But I refuse to let that stop me.
The reality is that:
• Schools are failing to teach ASL effectively.
• Nonverbal and Autistic individuals often lack resources to communicate confidently.
• Many hearing people want to learn ASL but don’t have access to the right guidance.
I want to change that, but I can’t do it alone.
The Vision: What This Fund Will Do
With your support, I will:
• Develop a full ASL curriculum that makes signing simple, natural, and practical.
• Create online ASL courses & resources for all learning styles and levels
• Build a website & video platform for easy, everyday learning.
• Support nonverbal & autistic communities by creating specialized tools and lessons.
• Advocate for ASL accessibility in schools & public spaces because ASL should be for everyone!
Imagine a world where ASL is a natural as speaking, where Deaf and Hearing people communicate with ease, just like they did in Martha’s Vineyard historic Deaf community. That’s the future I’m fighting for.
