Jeannie Carter - help her receive in home rehab
Donation protected
Hello, my name is David OBanion and I’m fundraising for Jeannie Carter. Jeannie has had 3 major surgeries in a year and still cannot walk. She needs your help with travel costs and disability friendly updates to her home ASAP. Your donations are desperately needed to transition Jeannie home and keep her from being placed in a nursing home. Jeannie is only 47 with children still living at home with her. She needs your help.
Jeannie is the legal guardian of an adult son with autism. She is valued at home and your financial assistance will help facilitate her return home to keep her family together. A good portion of your combined donations will go for a ramp, bathroom and shower modifications, bedroom modifications and other safety devices needed while she’s using a wheelchair and undergoing more intensive physical therapy.
The remaining portion of the donations will cover family travel expenses and food when visiting and supporting her until she gets transferred home.
In February Jeannie finally accepted that something was wrong with her body besides her Achilles’ tendon healing after surgery. After the last couple of months of gradual decrease of strength in her legs, she started falling more and more often. She finally went to the ER to discover she had cervical stenosis in her C5-C7. But having no pain there she didn’t realize there was a problem. She then had an MRI to find out she had stenosis in the middle of her back constricting the spinal cord. This is what was causing her to loose her ability to walk. She was admitted March 1 at OSF St Frances in Peoria. The C-spine surgery turned out to be more complicated than the neurosurgeon had anticipated. Jeannie had developed bone spurs inside the spinal canal. During the surgery it was discovered that a spur had almost rubbed through the outer lining of the spinal cord. She had been moments away from becoming a quadriplegic. The neurosurgeon said he had never encountered a situation like this in his over 20 years as a surgeon. Because of this he couldn’t do the second surgery immediately like he had anticipated. She then went through a strict rehab to rebuild what she could and heal as much as possible so that the neurosurgeon could see what damage had been done. Unfortunately the second surgery took longer to get to than originally expected. On May 25, the second surgery consisting of a fusion in the thoracic spine of T5 -T9. This was to decompress the spine canal and give it more room. The neurosurgeon was very pleased with how the surgery went. Unfortunately when dealing with the spinal cord and nerves, recovery can be long and slow. She is currently waiting to be accepted into an acute rehab facility. We are looking for help with travel and medical expenses due to the hospital being 2 hours away. Rehab may end up being in the Chicago Suburbs or in Champagne or Normal IL. which would add the cost of tolls and even more gas. Most know Jeannie as friendly, loving, kind and generous person. She would help anyone in their time of need to the best of her ability. She has a lot of unknowns at this time and a long road ahead. As a family we’d like to help relieve some of the burden on Jeannie while she is in the hospital or until she is able to get back on his feet. Again There will have to be modifications done to the house to accommodate a wheel chair and other equipment she might need for her recovery. Being placed in a nursing home is a horrible existence and they will do nothing to ensure she recovers.
