Hi I’m Carrie Schuster and I am starting this fundraiser for Jemila Mamudu. On Friday, September 9th, Jemila was on her way to a meeting with her volunteer team leader when her car caught on fire. Jamila was able to escape the car unharmed, however the car was destroyed.
Jemila is from Nigeria and was part of our Elevation eFam and Online eGroup community for several years before coming to the States to continue her studies in Peace and Conflict Studies at UNCG (graduates from this program help negotiate peace treaties, among other things). She intentionally picked a school in a city with an Elevation Campus so that she could participate in Elevation Church in-person and volunteer on campus. Once she arrived, she found that due to COVID, the church was no longer meeting in Greensboro but had consolidated to a Triad campus meeting in Winston-Salem. Not having a car, Jemila refused to be stopped by this obstacle and chose to bus to the Winston-Salem campus from her apartment near UNCG campus - sometimes taking 2-3 hours each way - while she saved up funds to purchase a car. She started volunteering in our Volunteer Orientation Team and as she made friends among our volunteers, made arrangements to carpool as she could. Eventually she saved enough and was able to purchase an inexpensive car allowing her to commute to/from church, and opening up employment opportunities.
Jemila worked with economically disadvantaged kids in the Imprints Cares Summer Program over the summer break and is scheduled to start her new job at Ashley Academy in Winston-Salem on Monday. Having a car enables her to work, volunteer, and continue her studies at UNCG.
Jemila’s family in Africa has sacrificed much so that she can study in the U.S. and she works hard to pay for her expenses while in school. We are her local family - Please join me by contributing what you can to help replace her car- I believe this is our opportunity to honor God by honoring Jemila.
