Help Family and Great Grandpa with Dementia

Donation protected
My name is Gina Bocanegra and Jesse Bocanegra is my father. He is 83 yrs old, a widower and was formally diagnosed with early dementia in 2019. He is a heart patient and will soon have a defibrillator/pacemaker implanted as his heart is weak. In addition to those issues, he also sees 2 Gastroenterology specialists, a urologist and oncologist. He is currently in physical and speech therapy to help him swallow correctly so that food and drink do not enter his lungs. He is also in remission from cancer.

My dad does not administer his own medication, does not drive, does not prepare his own meals, does not shower himself, is unable to pay bills and has next to no short-term memory. He requires 24/7 supervision and care.

With the help of my daughter, we have cared for my elderly parents full time since 2014. At this time, we can no longer be full-time caregivers and we need help. Dad has Medicare but we need to get him qualified for Medicaid so that he can have a provider at home and eventually move him to a nursing home.

HERE IS THE ISSUE: If dad receives Medicaid, the government will try to recover (take) his home. Dad considers the home to be mine and my daughters as we have cared for him (and my late mother) full time since 2014. I have held off on most other opportunities in order to care for my elderly parents instead.

HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED: The funds raised will be used to pay $12,500 for an elder law attorney to handle these affairs including preserving the home so the family keeps it and related Medicaid affairs, preparing documents for doctors to sign, applications and nursing home placement in the future and related expenses. Funds donated above attorney's fees will be used to help pay for a full-time provider for dad until Medicaid's full-time provider program kicks in (I am told there's a possible 2 year wait for full-time help but it could be sooner). The potential cost to pay a provider 6 days a week so that I can work is roughly $52,500 per year (not including overnight care).

Leaving my father's side in order to pursue work would be detrimental to his life and well-being if he was left alone, so it is not an option.  He needs a full-time provider now and nursing home placement in the future (once Covid cases go down again and visiting restrictions are lifted) .

We have already consulted with several attorneys and have chosen the one best suited for our case. We just need the funds to move forward.

Caregiving for the elderly with major medical issues for the past 6 years and now with dementia 24/7 has been both incredibly rewarding and indescribably challenging. We need respite care and relief. Your support is greatly appreciated and would mean so much for our family.
