Help Me Get Back on My Feet ✨

Dear Friends, Family & Community at Large ~

          On Friday evening December 15th, I was involved in a horrific accident and have broken my Femur and Patella (knee).  From what Ive been told by the surgeon, the EMT’s and the nurses of Lawrence General,  this was the worst laceration and bone break they had ever seen. I had a titanium rod placed in my leg and several screws holding my knee together.  I have never broken a bone before, nor have i needed to step foot into any medical facility for over 20 years, so this is a whole new world for me.

           The challenge of learning to walk again on this road to recovery will take many months. I am raising money to assist in this journey & to relieve the financial pressure and stress during this experience.

            My wish is to rent a small apartment in close proximity to the Lilypad Jazz Club, in Cambridge, which I manage and have been involved with since 2005.  I will need that wonderful community of friends and musicians very close to me for a while, as I must rely on the assistance of others to do most anything right now.

            I also wish to have my 11 year old wonder dog Annie the Jack Russell with me, which will require assistance as well, being in walking distance to my music community will help build a network of dog walkers for her.. she is an absolute gem and the best nurse I could ask for…

           Ever since I discovered the great science of Yoga and became a vegetarian decades ago, I have used food as my medicine, and have dedicated much of my time to working out a diet that works best for me and it involves lots of time, preparation and dedication. I need help to make sure I am able to not only keep up this diet, but increase my intake of diverse nutrients that are strengthening and bone building. Being able to periodically hire a massage therapist or acupuncture sessions will also be essential in getting me back on my feet.

           For all this and for the many expenses now yet unseen, I ask for your help.

      For those of you that would like some more details about my accident, or why I don’t have an apartment in the city I work in, I will explain below.
         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
         In the winter of 2022, after over 20 years of living in the city, I was given a surprise 30 day notice and my apt building was sold immediately for 8 million dollars.  Rather than fight my way back into the city, I opted to take out a loan and buy a beautiful vintage rare Toyota RV that had just been imported from Japan. I fell in love with this bus, and was putting a lot of my efforts into making it totally self sustainable, both as a tiny home, but also as a tiny recording studio.  I was hoping to put the final touches of solar panels on the roof this year, and move with the sun.
             I was just starting to get the hang of living in these close quarters with the ability to change the views of my window at anytime… I loved it… I also was recording an album with small keyboards, and really on to something unique.
             To make this all possible, I rented a 2 car garage in the suburbs to store everything I owned in the world in one place and had built shelves and organizational patterns to allow for a mobile life (while still working many nights a week in Cambridge)
             Last Friday, upon arriving to my storage garage, as I hit the brake, the gas pedal dropped to the floor and stuck there. I was immediately rocketed thru the garage door and out the backside of the building itself (which is sectioned into a few units)
The bus was still trying to accelerate and wheels spinning as I dropped out onto the ground. Gasoline was pouring all over the place, including onto me. I fought to stay conscious as I realized in this quiet neighborhood, there was a chance no one had heard the crash. I went to stand up and realized that my leg bone was no longer connected, I fell to the ground again. I fought to get up again and was able to cradle my broken leg in my arm like a baby and hop to the bus and hold the horn for a few minutes until I heard someone yell the words “911” in the distance… I tried to free Annie from all the debris, but she was pinned under a bunch of things, and I didn’t have the strength to grab her (she is ok!) I then saw a tshirt in the front seat, I grabbed it, ripped it and made a tourniquet for my leg, which at this point was losing massive amounts of blood. (I was later told this saved my leg and my life) Within 10 minutes there were fire fighters and EMT’s all around me, half of the responders working on me and half working on the very real possibility of either the building coming down or the bus exploding… it was something out of a movie, truly.
         I never lost consciousness, so I was present for everything… My femur bone had broken in half with the top part bulging way out into my hip and the bottom half breaking out thru the back of my leg and knee. The pain is unlike anything I could describe.  I was immediately taken to Lawrence General Hospital and into surgery to put everything back together. The strangest aspect of this crash was that I fell into a nest of ladybugs, and while in the ambulance and in the emergency room there were ladybugs flying around and crawling all over the people helping me. The doctor said he had to clean over a dozen live ladybugs out of my wounds (and I am now on a serious round of anti biotics because of that!). In all cultures around the globe, Ladybugs are seen as good omens for luck and prosperity and protection, so this was particularly cosmic to me and as silly as it sounds, made me feel as if I was saved by an unseen force and that my mother & grandmothers were watching over me.
I really don’t know what quite lies ahead, but I know at this moment, I really could use the help of my friends and the community at large.  In an instant I lost my home, my storage facility and the ability to walk..
         I’m sure I will channel this experience thru my music and will continue to use my tiny keyboards in bed to express my feelings of gratitude to have been saved and to be ALIVE!!!
           Thank You
