Donate to the AEA NY Showcase of SELF-INJURIOUS BEHAVIOR to get the work and its cast to NY and help raise awareness of the issues faced by families dealing with autism.
Friend,
When I began writing this play, I didn’t know what it was. Was it really a play or was it just a thing I needed to get on paper, like, for therapeutic purposes? I didn’t even know if it would resonate with anyone besides people who were in situations just like mine - and let’s face it, those people don’t leave their houses, y’all! So, I was pretty convinced that in the end, it was probably for nobody but me, and that was fine. All I knew was that I needed to write it or I would explode.

What a journey it’s been since 2013! I’ve tried to just keep doing the next logical thing...taking each step as it comes and focusing on getting that step right. The reaction to the workshop production at Theatre Three in Dallas last year was humbling and extremely eye-opening. It’s clear now that this story is a lot bigger than me. People are hungry for honesty about depression, parenthood, and the very real challenges of overcoming the unthinkable happenings in our lives that slap us sideways at 3am on a Tuesday and leave us weeping alone on the kitchen floor. They’re also hungry for women’s stories, (FINALLY!) which fills me with so much hope.

And now, here we are! A thousand small steps have led us to this amazing opportunity to do an equity showcase in New York, which will allow us to share this thing not only with more audiences, in general, but specifically with people who could help us share the story with a much broader audience and promote understanding and empathy for these issues on a larger scale. A conversation needs to be had in this country about the autism community and the support needed by the rest of us for them and their caregivers to thrive and not end up forgotten. My son no longer lives with me. He’s taken care of by the best folks possible and it continues to be a struggle, being apart. But what I CAN do is tell this story for those who are still down in it, just trying to keep breathing from one minute to the next. I plan to keep doing that however I can, and you can help make that possible in a very real way!
