Help Jevik Hummer in his fight against PANDAS

Donation protected
I am writing this story on behalf of my sister-in-law and brother, Robin and Josh Hummer for my nephew Jevik. Some of you may or not be aware that Jevik has P.A.N.D.A.S. (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus) since he was 14 years old.  Most of you have probably never heard of this disease.  I know I didn't before Jevik was diagnosed in September 2016.  P.A.N.D.A.S is caused by a the Streptococcus bacterium following strep infections.  Jevik also has a history of strep throat since he was a toddler.  PANDAS is caused by the body's immune system responding to a Strep infection in a way that affects the brain.  When the body senses an illness-causing bacteria like Strep, it makes proteins called antibodies.  Antibodies enter the bloodstream and travel through the body, they attack and neutralize the bacteria, helping our bodies heal from infection.  Most of the time, our antibodies are "smart" enough to avoid attacking healthy cells and tissue.  Cross reactivity is a  phenomenon when our antibodies attack our own cells.  Children with PANDAS, the antibodies created by their immune system to fight the Strep bacteria are also targeting healthy cells in the brain and this cross reaction is what causes the PANDA symptoms. As you can imagine, when Jevik's own antibodies started attacking healthy cells in the brain it certainly caused neurological disorders.  It started with a sudden onset of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), anxiety and tics in mid February 2016.  His school also noted a change in his behavior.  Was repetitive when talking, closet door having to be just so, lock on his locker always needed to be set on 0 before leaving.  Tics consisted of head jerks and uncharacteristic arm movements.  Anxiety resolved around leaving the house, and behavior regressed around his parents, "would act like a 14 year old, then all of a sudden act like a 5 year old".  Sleeping became problematic and started having outbursts when frustrated.  The last month of Jevik's 8th grade, he was homebound due to his OCD and anxiety being too much.  He missed the bus multiple times.  Grades went from A's and B's to C's and D's after February 2016.  Jevik also had his tonsils and adenoids removed in 2016 hoping this would alleviate his PANDAS symptoms.  However despite the surgery, his high doses of antibiotics and different psyche medications for anxiety did not alleviate his PANDAS.  On January 31st, 2017 Jevik did get a IVIG infusion at a PANDAS specialist, Dr. Elizabeth Latimer.  It is an intravenous administration of immunoglobulins mainly IgG.  Unfortunately, this type of treatment insurance companies do not cover the costs.  Josh and Robin had to pay $15,000 out of pocket for this treatment which is most effective for treating PANDAS.  Jevik got this treatment in the middle of his freshman year and IT WORKED! He did extremely well for the next few years.  He was 97% better during his sophomore year.  He started 11th grade and in November 2018 had a relapse with repeating things in his head in school.  Because of his age and the onset of puberty and hormones more than likely triggered his relapse.  The specialist doctor in Washington D.C. told  Josh and Robin that he may need another infusion when he gets older.  To make a long story short, Jevik is now in his senior year.  He has had major anxiety episodes and can no longer be in school.  He is doing a virtual school but misses his friends.  Plus he is missing out on his senior year of high school.Jevik needs another IVIG treatment which will cost $20,000.  The insurance does not cover this treatment!! So Josh and Robin will have to pay out of pocket to help their son once more.  I know most of you know my brother Josh and all the crap he's had to deal with 5 years ago.  I have to say he got a pretty raw deal.  I set this up for Josh and Robin.  They are not the type of people to ask for help and are both hardworking.  Jevik knows there is something wrong with his brain and he just can't fix it himself.  Imagine your brain just 100 miles an hour non stop.  That's what his does from PANDAS. Jevik certainly doesn't deserve to deal with this disease.  And Josh and Robin will be so grateful for any amount of support.  No donation is too small.  As my brother texted me today, "it's been a very, very rough road"  So please donate if you can and please keep Jevik, Josh and Robin Hummer in your prayers as well!  God Bless You All!
