Help jij Otto ook aan een pijnvrije toekomst?

Otto heeft in zijn korte leven tot nu toe weinig geluk gekend. Hij is met drie andere pups op straat gedumpt, waar hij vervolgens door iemand is meegenomen om als prooi voor de vechthonden te dienen. Otto en z’n zusje Betty zijn op tijd door de politie gered. Broertje Paulie is later 30 km verderop gevonden. Helaas is het vierde pupje gedood. Otto en Betty zijn vervolgens naar een shelter in Griekenland gebracht. Geen ideale plek voor opgroeiende pups, maar gelukkig waren ze veilig.

De blijdschap was groot toen er een transport en een gastgezin beschikbaar was voor Otto. Hij mocht z’n koffer gaan pakken en een mooie toekomst in Nederland tegemoet gaan.

En zo gebeurde… Otto verblijft sinds 14 september jl. in een gastgezin in Nederland. Niets leek Otto meer in de weg te staan om een gouden mandje te vinden.

Helaas bleek al snel na aankomst dat er iets niet goed was. Otto liep regelmatig kreupel en was voor een jonge hond te rustig. Na een bezoek aan de dierenarts werd in eerste instantie gedacht aan groeipijnen. Otto kreeg voor twee weken pijnstillers. Deze pijnstillers leken te helpen, maar de gang van Otto is niet zuiver te noemen. Verder onderzoek door middel van röntgenfoto’s kon niet uitblijven.

Tot ons verdriet werd onze ergste nachtmerrie werkelijkheid: Otto heeft ernstige heupdysplasie (HD) met laxiteit en het neigt naar luxoid hip aan beide heupen. Otto is direct naar de Verwijskliniek doorverwezen voor verder onderzoek. Het woord euthanaseren werd op de achtergrond zelfs genoemd. Otto is geen geschikte kandidaat voor een bekkenkanteling. We wilden eerst onderzoeken of intensieve therapie een operatie zou kunnen voorkomen, maar de kans is te groot dat zijn heupen dan alsnog uit de kom schieten en dat hij alsnog grote pijn zal hebben. In de aankomende maanden kan het gebeuren dat het artrose proces al snel in gang wordt gezet. Daarom willen we met elkaar sparen om Otto te laten opereren!

Mirtos kan maximaal €1.500,- besteden aan Otto's traject helaas, omdat we een stichting zonder winst-oogmerk zijn en daarom niet meer ruimte hebben. Daarom is Otto voor een pijnvrije toekomst afhankelijk van donaties. Zijn gastgezin heeft zijn intake van €1.100 betaald. De partij in Griekenland waar Otto vandaan kwam heeft al €700,- gedoneerd. En ook via de rekening zijn veel donaties binnen gekomen.

Update januari 2025:

Otto is naar de Verwijskliniek geweest en heeft zijn intake met CT scan en Ortolani test gehad. Door deze testen kwamen er drie onthutsende feiten aan het licht:

Met jullie hulp hebben we er voor kunnen zorgen dat de meest belangrijke operatie plaats heeft kunnen vinden en kan de hydrotherapie bekostigd worden, zodat Otto zo pijnvrij mogelijk kan leven.

Het gastgezin van Otto heeft besloten dat ze Otto een zo mooi mogelijk leven willen geven en hij mag bij hen blijven. Echter kan het zo zijn dat er in de toekomst alsnog een heupoperatie nodig gaat zijn en een hydrotherapie traject is ook erg kostbaar. Daarom zijn wij en het gastgezin enorm dankbaar voor het mooie bedrag (in totaal €4913,66) dat er is opgehaald om Otto te helpen.

De crowdfunding zal nog tot 2 februari doorlopen. Mocht u de lieve Otto voor die tijd nog willen ondersteunen voor een pijnvrije toekomst, dan is een donatie nog steeds van harte welkom!

Otto has had little luck so far in his short life. He was dumped on the street with three other puppies, where he was then taken by someone to serve as prey for the fighting dogs. Otto and his sister Betty were rescued in time by the police. Brother Paulie was later found 30 km away. Unfortunately, the fourth puppy was killed. Otto and Betty were then taken to a shelter in Greece. Not an ideal place for growing puppies, but luckily they were safe.

There was great joy when transport and a host family were available for Otto. He was allowed to pack his suitcase and look forward to a bright future in the Netherlands.

And so it happened… Otto has been staying with a foster family in the Netherlands since September 14th. Nothing seemed to stand in Otto's way anymore to find a golden basket.

Unfortunately, it soon became apparent after arrival that something was wrong. Otto was regularly lame and was too calm for a young dog. After a visit to the vet, the first thought was growing pains. Otto was given painkillers for two weeks. These painkillers seemed to help, but Otto's walk could not be described as healthy. Further investigation by means of X-rays was inevitable.

To our sadness, our worst nightmare became reality: Otto has severe hip dysplasia (HD) with laxity and it tends to luxoid hip on both hips. Otto was immediately referred to the Referral Clinic for further examination. The word euthanize was even mentioned in the background. Otto is not a suitable candidate for a pelvic tilt. We first wanted to investigate whether intensive therapy could prevent surgery, but the chance is too great that his hips will still dislocate and that he will still be in great pain. In the coming months it may happen that the osteoarthritis process is quickly initiated. That's why we want to save together for operations!

Mirtos can spend a maximum of €1,500 on Otto's journey, unfortunately, because we are a non-profit foundation and therefore do not have more space. That's why Otto depends on donations for a pain-free future. His host family paid his intake of €1,100. The party in Greece where Otto came from has already donated €700. And many donations have also come through the bank account.

Update January 2025:

Otto went to De Verwijskliniek and had his intake with a CT scan and Ortolani test. These tests revealed three startling facts:

One of his hips ultimately does not require surgery, because the hip is well in its socket (due to osteoarthritis that has increased in the right place).

The tests initially showed that the other hip with HD could be supported with a 3DHip. We already hoped this, because other options are unaffordable. However, it turned out a little later (when the vets had measured everything) that the 3DHip was not possible after all. Otto has already developed 2 millimeters too much osteoarthritis in that hip to use this technique meaningfully. What a disappointment... Only a new hip may ultimately be appropriate in the future, but unfortunately this is unaffordable. Therefore, only hydrotherapy can be used to relieve this hip as much as possible.

During the CT scan it turned out that Otto also has elbow dysplasia on his other legs. So it turns out he has a total of four legs with a medical problem. There is nothing that can be done about elbow dysplasia. However, there were loose pieces in his elbow, which must have caused enormous pain for Otto. These have now been removed through keyhole surgery (€2,000). He is currently recovering from this with a lot of crate rest. It is expected that Otto will be able to live and grow old without much pain with his elbow dysplasia.

With your help, we were able to ensure that the most important operation could take place and the hydrotherapy could be funded, so that Otto can live as pain-free as possible. Otto's host family has decided that they want to give Otto the best life possible and he can stay with them. However, hip surgery may still be necessary in the future and a hydrotherapy process is also very expensive. That is why we and the host family are extremely grateful for the nice amount (a total of €4913.66) that has been raised to help Otto.
