Help Joanne DeSantis who is in the Pacific Nursing & Rehab Center due to a life threatening illness.
Joanne is the bartender at San Francisco's beloved The Saloon on Grant Street. Many of you in the blues community know and love her. She has worked for the owner of The Saloon, Myron Mu, since Halloween night of 1989--over 30 years.
Joanne, who also has congestive heart failure, came home 10 days ago and sat down in a chair. She noticed a bruise on her left leg forming. The bruise grew quickly and burst. She was terrified by the amount of blood seeping from her leg and quickly called an ambulance. She was treated at an ER for a life threatening hematoma. Two days later, she was moved from Kaiser Permanente hospital to the nursing home. Joanne will be discharged from Pacific Nursing & Rehab Center on November 25, 2020 and her last day for physical therapy in the facility is November 24th. It would be a wonderful gift to Joanne if we all could provide her with the financial support she so desperately needs at this time. For months she will have to have her leg wrapped every day and she requires physical therapy. Her insurance only covers a visiting nurse 3 times a week. The cost of necessary medications, nutrition, and integrative therapies plus a caretaker is not covered by her insurance.
Joanne can't walk, she can't cook, she can't stand up.
Additionally, Joanne, a resident of San Francisco since 1972, is in fear of losing her apartment. Her rent is very high. She will be unable to bartend for two years, which is how she has been supplementing her income so she can keep her apartment.
The Bay Area music scene is filled with wonderful caring people. We often say we are one big family. I am appealing especially to those of you that love and support The Saloon. Joanne needs your help.

Hematoma is a bad bruise. It happens when an injury causes blood to collect and pool under the skin. The pooling blood gives the skin a spongy, rubbery, lumpy feel. Hematoma is generally defined as a collection of blood outside of blood vessels. Most commonly, hematomas are caused by an injury to the wall of a blood vessel, prompting blood to seep out of the blood vessel into the surrounding tissues. A hematoma can result from an injury to any type of blood vessel (artery, vein, or small capillary). A hematoma usually describes bleeding which has more or less clotted. In Joanne's case, it was life threatening and will require considerable care.
Congestive Heart Failure is a condition in which the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs.
The weakening of the heart's pumping ability causes:
Blood and fluid to back up into the lungs
The buildup of fluid in the feet, ankles and legs - called edema
Tiredness and shortness of breath
Common causes of heart failure are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. It is more common in people who are 65 years old or older.
