Help Joe Grabowski - JoeFundMe

Dear friends, family, former and current coworkers, bar regulars, readers of Spirits, and general fans of Joe Grabowski,

If you’ve found yourself here, you probably know Joe to be a wonderful, kind, and community-oriented person. What you may not know is the extent of the medical issues Joe has been facing in the past 10 months.

Starting back in Spring of last year, Joe began feeling a variety of symptoms. A lingering pain and discomfort in his lower left side, nausea, endless tiredness, among others. Joe has had a history of both vascular issues and kidney issues his whole life but these symptoms were as new as they were concerning.

Since then, Joe has been through the gamut of labs, scans, procedures, doctors, and specialists, all the while racking up bill after bill after bill. Gastrointestinal doctors. Nephrologists. Urologists. Colonoscopy. Upper endoscopy. Cystoscopy. The list goes on, all in the name of deducing and fixing what is wrong. And the most current and urgent item on that list is that our beloved Joe needs an operation to remove a rather aggressive cyst from what is basically his only good and functional kidney. The cyst is encroaching upon the ureter, inhibiting the kidney’s ability to drain into his bladder, which is problematic at a minimum and realistically dangerous for him overall.

Joe is a full-time bartender who already works hard just to pay his regular, every day bills and rent. This surgery, added to all the other procedures over the last 10 months, has left Joe with nearly $10,000 in new bills to pay.

To make his financial situation more dire, Joe’s recovery from this surgery will put him out of work for an entire month - an entire month with zero income. As a non-salaried restaurant worker, there is no safety net for these big life events. And the medical bills Joe is facing are coming midway through a very slow winter season for the industry overall.

Joe has been a part of the Portland restaurant industry for nine years. He is someone that would give his community the shirt off his back. He’s always offering an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and constant kindness and support. He’s been the friend to lift you up and celebrate wins with. And this difficult time for him is our opportunity to give back to the person that gives himself to everyone while never asking for anything in return.

Your donations, big or small, can make a world of difference to help cover both medical and living costs. If you are able, please, share with your friends and anyone in or adjacent to the restaurant/bar community, especially here in Portland.
