Help Joe, Sarah, and Gwen with Mounting Medical Costs and Loss of Pay
Joe Welfeld and Sarah Hower have faced a cascade of medical issues over a short period of time, along with high expenses and loss of income.
Sarah finished treatment a little or a year ago for an aggressive form of breast cancer. Thankfully, her treatment was successful. But the family is still dealing with residual health issues related to the chemo.
Sarah's job doesn't earn enough to cover all the bills. Joe is the "breadwinner," and his salary keeps the family afloat. Joe tested COVID positive on Sunday, February 9 and was admitted to New Milford Hospital where he was diagnosed with acute kidney injury, unstable blood pressure, and dangerously high sugar levels. He was then transferred to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he experienced AFIB. He will be in the hospital for at least a few more days, if not longer, with bedrest at home before he returns to work. Unfortunately, Joe does not have any accrued vacation or sick days remaining after other health issues this year. This means applying for short-term disability and state financial assistance (which is deducted from the short-term benefits). It will be a few weeks until these benefits kick in.
In addition to the usual living expenses, Joe and Sarah are supplementing their daughter's college expenses. Gwen is currently a junior at PACE in NYC. In addition to student loans and her parents' help, Gwen works whenever she comes home. Unfortunately, she currently has a back injury, which is temporarily limiting her ability to work and get paid and look for work in NYC. When it rains it pours.
They are still paying financial catch-up due to past health issues. There is no wiggle room. They are unable to cover all their bills and, without help, may have to choose between keeping their health insurance, keeping the lights on, or keeping their home.
Even $5 donations add up. Whatever you can give, whatever you can do, will be appreciated beyond measure.
